A 23-year-old Kansas City man is being held in the Cass County Jail on $100,000 bond in connection with a home invasion robbery that occurred in rural Freeman on July 30.
Oscar E. Williams is charged with two counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary and one count of felony theft in connection with the case, in which he and at least one other suspect allegedly entered the home on M-2 Highway, threatened the two occupants with an AK-47 assault rifle and a shotgun, restrained them with plastic ties and electrical tape and stole more than $13,000 worth of electronics, firearms, jewelry and cash.
According to the probable cause statement filed by a Cass County Sheriffs detective, Williams once lived at the residence with the homeowners, who had previously told him they would be away for the weekend on July 29 and 30.
The homeowners adult daughter and a friend were house-sitting at the residence when Williams arrived unexpectedly at around 11 p.m. July 29, court documents said.
The daughter told officers Williams acted strangely, then left the residence. The daughter told officers she found it strange that he would arrive at the rural residence and then leave, because she knew he did not have a vehicle.
Approximately an hour later, documents said, the daughters friend went to the kitchen to fix a snack when he heard a chime ring, signaling that the front door of the residence had been opened. The daughter was in the living room at the time, he told officers.
He said he called out to the woman, but received no response, so he began walking toward the living room when he was confronted by an unknown male who was armed with what he believed to be an assault rifle. He said he also observed a second man, armed with a shotgun, inside the residence. He and the woman were ordered to lay down on the floor and both were tied at the wrists with plastic ties and at the ankles with electrical tape, he said.
He told officers that both he and the woman were held at gunpoint for approximately one hour while the house was ransacked. He said that during that time, he believed the two gunmen were talking to a third suspect that neither he or the female victim could see.
Before leaving the house, he said, the suspects took all the telephones from the house. He said he was able to free himself after the suspects left by breaking the restraints.
He then broke the restraints on the female victim before both ran on foot to call officers from a neighbors house.
Among the property stolen from the residence was a cellular telephone owned by the owner of the home.
Information gained from cell phone records led deputies to the Williams suspect, as well as to a Kansas City business which had purchased some of the stolen items from the suspect.
Williams was arrested Sept. 2, and arraigned Sept. 8 in Cass County Circuit Court. His alleged accomplices remain at large.
A case review has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22 before Associate Circuit Judge Michael Rumley.
