Cortez D. Washington, 29, of Grandview, was sentenced in Cass County Circuit Court to seven years in prison after pleading guilty Aug. 29 to second-degree armed robbery and armed criminal action in connection with the April 2010 armed robbery of the Raymore Noe’s Jewelry Store.

Washington’s plea came on the day is trial for first-degree armed robbery was to begin before Presiding Circuit Judge Jacqueline Cook. He waived a presentence investigation was immediately sentenced. His co-defendant, Markieta S. Clark, 19, also of Grandview, was granted probation last spring after successfully completing a 120-day post-sentence program after her December 2010 plea of guilty to second degree armed robbery.

However, on July 30 of this year, the Board of Probation and Parole filed a Notice of Citation with Circuit Judge Mike Wagner, alleging a probation violation. She was arrested this week and is being held in the Cass County Jail pending a Sept. 26 court hearing.

According to court documents, the two entered the store at 2017 W. Foxwood Dr. in Raymore just after 11 a.m. April 30, 2010. Witnesses said the suspect later identified as Washington wore all black with a hoodie and gloves. He waved an uzi-style gun in a “nervous manner,” pointing the weapon at everyone in the store at one time or another during the robbery.

The second suspect, later identified as Clark, followed Washington into the store, and both suspects went to a jewelry counter and began yelling at an employee to begin putting merchandise into a bag. The two left the store with more than $5,500 in merchandise and nearly $300 in cash.

Belton police located a stolen van which had been used as the getaway vehicle, abandoned within their city, while Raymore officers found a car registered to Clark, which had been used after the van was dumped, located at Walmart.

Within 90 minutes of the robbery, Clark was being questioned. Washington was arrested later in Omaha, Neb.
