Library to host ‘Come Write In’ In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Public Library will host “Come Write In” at 6 p.m. each Tuesday in November at the library, 400 E. Mechanic. All aspiring writers are invited to have coffee and meet other aspiring writers. Bring paper and pencil or laptop computer, or use the library’s computers to work on your project. Women’s Health Service clinics planned The Women’s Health Services Belton clinics will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16; Thursday, Nov. 17 and Tuesday, Nov. 22. The clinic is located at 119 Congress St. in Belton. Appointments are also available for supply pickup. Participants must call for an appointment and cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Services include comprehensive well woman exams including clinical breast exam, Pap smear, pelvic, HIV and sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, reproductive and contraceptive counseling as well as the issuance of contraceptive supplies. Charges for the services are based on a sliding fee scale according to household income. BHS Theatre Department hosts talent show The Belton High School Theatre department is looking for a variety of acts to participate in the Annual Coffeehouse Cabaret Talent Show. All types of acts are invited to participate. Auditions for the talent show will be Monday, Nov. 14 from 3-5 p.m. in the Forum Theatre. The Coffeehouse Cabaret Talent Show performance will be Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Forum Theatre.


Blue Note Boosters hold poinsettia sale The Harrisonville High School Blue Note Boosters will hold a poinsettia sale for the Christmas season. Proceeds will benefit the 2011-2012 Blue Note Boosters budget. The cost per poinsettia will be $15, and those buying nine plants will get one free. Colors available will be red, pink and white, and the plants come in a 6-1/2 inch foil-covered pot, 18-20 inches tall. Delivery will be Thursday, Dec. 1. Belton Parks plans ‘Kids Holiday In’ “Kids Holiday In” is a way for parents to have time to shop or relax knowing the kids, ages 4 to 12 years, will be kept active and entertained. “Kids Holiday In” will be held the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the High Blue Wellness Center. Cost is $30 for the first child and $15 for each additional child if registered by Nov. 18. After that, the cost is $35 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. A pancake breakfast and pizza lunch is provided. Registration deadline is Nov. 22. Space is limited, so register early to ensure a spot. Kids will need to bring a swimsuit and towel. Free Thanksgiving Dinner planned in Archie The Third Annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Archie United Methodist Church, Chestnut and Ohio Streets, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24.


West Line Opry set for Tuesday evenings The West Line Opry will be held from 7-10 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the West Line Community Center. Come out and enjoy some family fun. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.


Coleman Baptist hosts clothing giveaway A free clothing giveaway, along with some household items, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 11-12 at the Coleman Baptist Church, 17101 E. 203rd St., Peculiar. All are welcome. For more information, call 816-779-5707.


St. Peter’s to celebrate 140th birthday St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Harrisonville will hold its 140th birthday celebration immediately after the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Nov. 13, in Spencer Hall. Refreshments will be served. The church is located at 400 W. Wall St.


Belton Boosters team up with Ruby Tuesday The Belton Booster Club will team up with Ruby Tuesday to raise money for Belton students Nov. 28-29 at the Belton location, 1300 E. North Ave. On these dates, when customers present a flyer, 20 percent of their purchase will be given back to Belton Booster Club. HHS announces Senior Citizens’ Dinner Local senior citizens are invited to the annual Senior Citizens’ Thanksgiving Banquet on Monday, Nov. 21, hosted by the Harrisonville High School Student Council. The banquet will take place in the HHS gymnasium beginning at 5:30 p.m. After the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, entertainment will be provided by the HHS Jazz band and the show choir, Music Makers. The deadline for reserving transportation is Wednesday, Nov. 16. Local businesses and community members make this event possible. Applebees to serve veterans Kansas City area Applebees Restaurants, including the Harrisonville location at 2401 Rock Haven Rd., will serve free meals to veterans and troops on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. This is the third consecutive year Applebees has provided the meal. The Veterans Day menu includes a number of familiar items. Veterans must provide proof of service for the meal, which is available from open to close on Veterans Day.


Raymore plans fall yard waste pickup The City of Raymore will conduct its annual fall yard waste pickup event Saturday, Nov. 19, with curbside collections beginning at 7 a.m. Residents should place their grass clippings, leaves, vines and hedge trimmings at the curb on this date using paper yard waste bags available at any home improvement store. Acceptable yard waste for pickup does not include dirt or rocks. Tree limbs will also be picked up but unlike this past July’s storm debris collection, limb bundle dimensions should not exceed 3 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter. Limbs may be bundled with twine or rope. This service is included in the cost of basic solid waste collection.


Screenings offered for Midway children Parents of children 4 months to 4 years old that live in the Cass Midway School District have the opportunity for free developmental screenings for their children on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Wednesday, Nov. 16. DPACD offers Peculiar history program If you’ve ever wondered about the high points of Peculiar’s history or you’re just curious, please join the Downtown Peculiar Arts & Culture District on Monday, Nov. 14, to get your questions answered. Carol Bohl with the Cass County Historic Society will be presenting this program as a part of the Missouri Main Street Affiliate Program grant recently awarded to DPACD. She will share how Peculiar got its name, information about its railroad background, its three legged water tower and our Civil War history as well as the other things that make Peculiar peculiar. Attendees may even learn a little about the town capsule buried during Peculiar’s centennial celebration in 1968. Join us for light snacks and lots of fun information at Friendship Hall located at 163 W. Center St. in Peculiar. The program will start at 7 p.m.


Faith Baptist plans ‘Hanging of the Green’ Area residents are invited to the Faith Baptist Church of Harrisonville for the “Hanging of the Green” service on Sunday, Nov. 27. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a light meal and the making of a tree decoration. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the program will include children helping hang the Christmas green with Bible readings and Christmas hymns. The church is located at 23705 E. M-2 Highway. Journey through Bethlehem planned “Journey through Bethlehem,” a live nativity production, will be performed from 7-9 p.m. Fri., Dec. 9; and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11, at New Vision Church of the Nazarene, M-58 Highway and Sunrise Drive in Raymore. Presentations of the Christmas story begin every 15 minutes. The production will provide free holiday fun for the whole family. Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Bank’s annual Coats for Kids project. This year will mark the seventh anniversary for this event. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. In the years past, the program has raised more than $18,000 and donated more than 850 coats to children at 12 different elementary schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Raymore and Peculiar. To help in this effort, you may make a monetary donation at any of the bank’s five financial center location in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Pearl St., Harrisonville, MO 64701. Associates will then purchase brand new coats from local retailers and deliver them to the children in need in time for the cold weather.


HBW to sponsor Christmas Homes Tour Christmas is near, and the Harrisonville Business Women of Missouri’s 14th Annual Christmas Homes Tour is in the planning stages. The event is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 4. The 2011 tour features five homes: the Whalen residence, an 1847 pre-Civil War home, at 105 N. Price in Harrisonville; and four contemporary homes in Pleasant Hill: the Atkins residence, 200 Breezeway; the Grant Home, 1309 Strictus St.; the Hamilton residence, 1511 Whispering Ridge; and the Zvacek home, 2200 Alexandria Ln. Tickets cost $10 and may be purchased at the Pleasant Hill Times, 126 First St., and at other locations in Harrisonville: Hawthorne Bank, 100 Plaza Dr.; Community Bank, 1503 N. M-291 Highway; Commerce Bank, 1301 Locust St.; and Stafford & Stafford Insurance, 801 S. Commercial St. Tickets may also be purchased at any of the homes on the day of the tour. Proceeds from this annual event supports the organization’s general budget which includes Hope Haven, Cass County’s shelter for abused women and their children; the annual spaghetti dinner and dance for the Cass County special population and other administrative and community expenses.


Mobile recycling set for Peculiar The regularly scheduled mobile recycling event will be at the former Raymore-Peculiar Freshman Center, 21001 S. School Rd., Peculiar, this Saturday and Sunday. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Exam stations closed today The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed in observance of Veterans’ Day today. Normal operations will resume on Monday, Nov. 14.


Auxiliary to host Pre-Christmas Sale today The Cass Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will host a Pre-Christmas Sale from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in Conference Room 3 at Cass Regional Medical Center, located at 2800 E. Rock Haven Rd. in Harrisonville. The sale will feature Christmas ornaments, decorations, home decor and more. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Auxiliary.


Ministers’ fellowship to meet The Belton Ministers’ Fellowship will meet at noon Tuesday, Nov. 15 for lunch at Carnegie Village. Time together will be spent in fellowship and in finalizing the plans for the community Thanksgiving service to take place at the Belton Assembly of God Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. All ministers are invited. At the Thanksgiving service, an offering will be taken to support Heart n Hand Ministries in the community. Attendees are asked to bring canned goods to the service for Heart n Hand.


Thrift shop plans Christmas Open House The Harrisonville Thrift Shop invites the public to its annual Christmas Open House from noon to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. Supporting this store ministry allows funds to be given to the Harrisonville Ministerial Alliance Emergency Assistance program – helping those in need within the local community. Adding to the fun will be door prizes and holiday refreshments. The Harrisonville Thrift Shop is located at 1405 S. Commercial St., Harrisonville, and regular business hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The business is normally closed Friday and Sunday. Raymore Chamber sponsors craft fair The Annual Raymore Chamber of Commerce Craft Fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at Eagle Glen Intermediate School, 100 S. Foxridge Dr. in Raymore. Free admission. Everyone is invited to attend. All of the proceeds from the craft fair are donated to the Mayor’s Food Drive, which will benefit those in need in our community. There will be raffle drawings throughout the day, as well as entertainment provided by local dance studios and individuals. Concessions available.


Sewing Guild plans monthly meeting The American Sewing Guild will meet at Hancock’s in Belton, from 10 a.m to noon Tuesday, Nov. 15. The program will cover working with waterproof fabrics. VFW to raise funds this weekend Harrisonville VFW Post 4409 along with Boy Scout Troop 3 will be at area stores asking for donations Saturday, Nov. 12. The VFW and Scouts will be distributing Buddy Poppies for this local annual VFW fundraising event. The event helps provide assistance to area veterans and their families in these difficult times. The VFW is also asking veterans of all ages to join them this weekend to find out the latest information regarding veterans issues. Stop by the VFW post on Commercial Street across from Casey’s.


First Sock Hop set for Nov. 18 The Downtown Belton Main Street Inc. organization will hold its first of what is planned to be annual Sock Hop from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Nov. 18 at the German American Club, 516 Bong St., in Belton. The event, featuring the Relics band and several contests, will benefit the revitalization of downtown Belton, Main Street and Christmas lighting.
