Library to host Come Write In In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Public Library will host Come Write In at 6 p.m. each Tuesday in November at the library, 400 E. Mechanic. All aspiring writers are invited to have coffee and meet other aspiring writers. Bring paper and pencil or laptop computer, or use the librarys computers to work on your project. Womens Health Service clinic planned A Womens Health Services Belton clinic will be held Tuesday, Nov. 22. The clinic is located at 119 Congress St. in Belton. Appointments are also available for supply pickup. Participants must call for an appointment and cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Belton Parks plans Kids Holiday In Kids Holiday In is a way for parents to have time to shop or relax knowing the kids, ages 4 to 12 years, will be kept active and entertained. Kids Holiday In will be held the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the High Blue Wellness Center. Cost is $30 for the first child and $15 for each additional child if registered by Nov. 18. After that, the cost is $35 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. A pancake breakfast and pizza lunch is provided. Registration deadline is Nov. 22. Space is limited, so register early to ensure a spot. Kids will need to bring a swimsuit and towel. Free Thanksgiving Dinner planned in Archie The Third Annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Archie United Methodist Church, Chestnut and Ohio streets, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24.
West Line Opry set for Tuesday evenings The West Line Opry will be held from 7-10 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the West Line Community Center. Come out and enjoy some family fun. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.
Belton Boosters team up with Ruby Tuesday The Belton Booster Club will team up with Ruby Tuesday to raise money for Belton students Nov. 28-29 at the Belton location, 1300 E. North Ave. On these dates, when customers present a flyer, 20 percent of their purchase will be given back to Belton Booster Club. HHS announces Senior Citizens Dinner Local senior citizens are invited to the annual Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Banquet on Monday, Nov. 21, hosted by the Harrisonville High School Student Council. The banquet will take place in the HHS gymnasium beginning at 5:30 p.m. After the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, entertainment will be provided by the HHS Jazz band and the show choir, Music Makers. The deadline for reserving transportation is Wednesday, Nov. 16. Local businesses and community members make this event possible. Raymore plans fall yard waste pickup The City of Raymore will conduct its annual fall yard waste pickup event Saturday, Nov. 19, with curbside collections beginning at 7 a.m. Residents should place their grass clippings, leaves, vines and hedge trimmings at the curb on this date using paper yard waste bags available at any home improvement store. Acceptable yard waste for pickup does not include dirt or rocks. Tree limbs will also be picked up but unlike this past Julys storm debris collection, limb bundle dimensions should not exceed 3 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter. Limbs may be bundled with twine or rope. This service is included in the cost of basic solid waste collection.
Faith Baptist plans Hanging of the Green Area residents are invited to the Faith Baptist Church of Harrisonville for the Hanging of the Green service on Sunday, Nov. 27. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a light meal and the making of a tree decoration. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the program will include children helping hang the Christmas green with Bible readings and Christmas hymns. The church is located at 23705 E. M-2 Highway. Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Banks annual Coats for Kids project. This year will mark the seventh anniversary for this event. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. In the years past, the program has raised more than $18,000 and donated more than 850 coats to children at 12 different elementary schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Raymore and Peculiar. To help in this effort, you may make a monetary donation at any of the banks five financial center location in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Pearl St., Harrisonville, MO 64701. Associates will then purchase brand new coats from local retailers and deliver them to the children in need in time for the cold weather.
Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Join us with your ideas and learn how you can get involved in protecting water quality in our streams, aquifers, and water bodies throughout the watershed. Thrift shop plans Christmas Open House The Harrisonville Thrift Shop invites the public to its annual Christmas Open House from noon to 6:30 p.m. today. Supporting this store ministry allows funds to be given to the Harrisonville Ministerial Alliance Emergency Assistance program helping those in need within the local community. Adding to the fun will be door prizes and holiday refreshments. The Harrisonville Thrift Shop is located at 1405 S. Commercial St., Harrisonville, and regular business hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The business is normally closed Friday and Sunday. Quilt Guild to meet The Raymore Quilt Guild will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the Raymore Baptist Church, M-58 Highway and Washington Street. Guests are welcome and are encouraged to attend.
Raymore Chamber sponsors craft fair The Annual Raymore Chamber of Commerce Craft Fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at Eagle Glen Intermediate School, 100 S. Foxridge Dr. in Raymore. Free admission. Everyone is invited to attend. All of the proceeds from the craft fair are donated to the Mayors Food Drive, which will benefit those in need in our community. There will be raffle drawings throughout the day, as well as entertainment provided by local dance studios and individuals. Concessions available.
First Sock Hop set for tonight The Downtown Belton Main Street Inc. organization will hold its first of what is planned to be annual Sock Hop from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Nov. 18 at the German American Club, 516 Bong St., in Belton. The event, featuring the Relics band and several contests, will benefit the revitalization of downtown Belton, Main Street and Christmas lighting. Every senior citizen in Belton is invited to attend the special event. A traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, dinner roll, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie will be served at no cost to the guests. The Belton Singers will perform Christmas favorites while members of the Belton High School student council and FFA, Belton School District administration and staff, and members of the community serve tables. Bus transportation, provided by Crabtree Transportation, will be available from CrossRoads - The United Methodist Church in Belton at 700 Quik Trip Way beginning at 11:30 a.m. Seniors are asked to drive around the side of the church to the lower level parking lot. Because of the availability of parking at the school, those attending the dinner are encouraged to take advantage of the free bus transportation. Basic EMT course on tap in Harrisonville Application packets are now available for the Harrisonville EMT Basic Course which will be offered, starting Dec. 12. The course will run from Dec. 12 through April 12. Classes will be held at Emergency Services Headquarters, 903 S. Commercial, on Mondays and Thursday evenings, from 6:30-10:30 p.m. In addition, there will be some Saturday classes meeting from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. To be considered, application materials must be returned by Dec. 5. Harrisonville offices to close Harrisonville City Hall and other city offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25 in observance of Thanksgiving. Offices will re-open Monday, Nov. 28 at their regular time.
Stacks seeks food donations Stacks Youth Project in Belton is seeking donations of cash and non perishable food for their annual Stacks 4 Teens outreach program. Items may be dropped off at 311 Main in downtown Belton. Contributions may also be mailed to the same address. Stacks Youth Project started the Stacks 4 Teens program in 2008, providing food and gift items to four area teens in need. Four years later, the program has grown to serve 40 at risk teens and their families this season. These teens range in age from 13-18 and are selected by the Belton School District to participate in the program. This program is the only assistance many of them receive for the holidays. Stacks Youth Program provides each recipient with a $50 gift card to shop for gifts and necessities. They are also provided with food for their families. Stacks Youth Project members and adult volunteers mentor the teens on their shopping trip. The first night of shopping is scheduled for Dec. 3. MSHP stations closed Nov. 24 The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 24. Normal operations will resume on Friday, Nov. 25.
Belton to celebrate Christmas on Main Street Beltons Main Street will be celebrating Christmas on Main, Saturday Dec. 3. Santa will be making a stop at Taras Cafe from 2-4 p.m. Parents are invited to bring their cameras for photos. An annual tradition on Main Street is the Christmas Wreath silent auction. Donated wreaths are now on display at Taras Cafe. Bidding will end on Dec. 3, with proceeds going to help revitalize Main Street. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Belton Chamber of Commerce will hold a Soup and Chili Cook-off. More information is available from the Chamber office. Historical Society to honor Bohl The Cass County Historical Society Quarterly meeting is set for this Saturday, Nov. 19, starting with a retirement reception for Executive Director Carol Bohl at 6 p.m. After the reception, the historic play "Fight at the Mockbee House" will be presented. This event will be held at the Cass County Courthouse on the square in Harrisonville.
Harrisonville youth wrestlers hold fundraiser The Harrisonville Youth Wrestling Club will have its annual pancake fundraiser this Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Harrisonville Applebees location from 8-10 a.m. Come out and have a plate of pancakes and a drink for just $5. You can buy tickets in advance from a wrestler or purchase them at the door.
Food 4 Thought donations sought The community is invited to help the Harrisonville Schools Food 4 Thought Backpack program by donating mittens and hats to be included in a December backpack. The Food 4 Thought Backpack program currently provides over 150 students in grades pre-K through high school with a backpack each weekend full of child-friendly, nutritious food. As the weather turns colder, many students served by the program are also in need of winter gear. Mittens and hats can be dropped off at Commerce Bank or Community Bank of Harrisonville through Dec. 2.
HELP offers Black Friday special For Black Friday, HELP Humane in Belton is hosting a two-day adoption special, beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 25. From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., senior pets and black cats 5 months and older will have their application fee waived. Both of these animals have a difficult time being noticed and getting their chance at their forever home, so we are promoting them on Friday morning, said Cyndi Dill, the shelters director. Quitmeier Law Firm of Kansas City is sponsoring the event. Those who sign up to be a shelter buddy will receive a complimentary gift. Community Blood Center visits Harrisonville The Community Blood Center will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Harrisonville from noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21. This is the 14th Annual Kansas City Chiefs Blood Drive. Those pre-registering will receive a free Chiefs t-shirt. East Lynne churches host Thanksgiving service The East Lynne Assembly of God Church will join the East Lynne Baptist Church for a Thanksgiving service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Baptist church on State Route K. A fellowship dinner will follow. Everyone is welcome.
