Library to host Come Write In In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Public Library will host Come Write In at 6 p.m. each Tuesday in November at the library, 400 E. Mechanic. All aspiring writers are invited to have coffee and meet other aspiring writers. Bring paper and pencil or laptop computer, or use the librarys computers to work on your project. West Line Opry set for Tuesday evenings The West Line Opry will be held from 7-10 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at the West Line Community Center. Come out and enjoy some family fun. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.
Belton Boosters team up with Ruby Tuesday The Belton Booster Club will team up with Ruby Tuesday to raise money for Belton students Nov. 28-29 at the Belton location, 1300 E. North Ave. On these dates, when customers present a flyer, 20 percent of their purchase will be given back to Belton Booster Club. Faith Baptist plans Hanging of the Green Area residents are invited to the Faith Baptist Church of Harrisonville for the Hanging of the Green service on Sunday, Nov. 27. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a light meal and the making of a tree decoration. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the program will include children helping hang the Christmas green with Bible readings and Christmas hymns. The church is located at 23705 E. M-2 Highway. Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Banks annual Coats for Kids project. This year will mark the seventh anniversary for this event. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. In the years past, the program has raised more than $18,000 and donated more than 850 coats to children at 12 different elementary schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Raymore and Peculiar. To help in this effort, you may make a monetary donation at any of the banks five financial center location in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Pearl St., Harrisonville, MO 64701. Associates will then purchase brand new coats from local retailers and deliver them to the children in need in time for the cold weather.
Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Join us with your ideas and learn how you can get involved in protecting water quality in our streams, aquifers, and water bodies throughout the watershed. Meetings are held at 4:45 p.m., the second Monday of each month at the office of PWSD No. 10 in Peculiar. Basic EMT course on tap in Harrisonville Application packets are now available for the Harrisonville EMT Basic Course which will be offered, starting Dec. 12. The course will run from Dec. 12 through April 12. Classes will be held at Emergency Services Headquarters, 903 S. Commercial, on Mondays and Thursday evenings, from 6:30-10:30 p.m. In addition, there will be some Saturday classes meeting from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. To be considered, application materials must be returned by Dec. 5. Harrisonville offices to close Harrisonville City Hall and other city offices will be closed Friday, Nov. 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Offices will re-open Monday, Nov. 28 at their regular time.
Stacks seeks food donations Stacks Youth Project in Belton is seeking donations of cash and non perishable food for their annual Stacks 4 Teens outreach program. Items may be dropped off at 311 Main in downtown Belton. Contributions may also be mailed to the same address. Stacks Youth Project started the Stacks 4 Teens program in 2008, providing food and gift items to four area teens in need. Four years later, the program has grown to serve 40 at risk teens and their families this season. These teens range in age from 13-18 and are selected by the Belton School District to participate in the program. This program is the only assistance many of them receive for the holidays. Stacks Youth Program provides each recipient with a $50 gift card to shop for gifts and necessities. They are also provided with food for their families. Stacks Youth Project members and adult volunteers mentor the teens on their shopping trip. The first night of shopping is scheduled for Dec. 3. Food 4 Thought donations sought The community is invited to help the Harrisonville Schools Food 4 Thought Backpack program by donating mittens and hats to be included in a December backpack. The Food 4 Thought Backpack program currently provides over 150 students in grades pre-K through high school with a backpack each weekend full of child-friendly, nutritious food. As the weather turns colder, many students served by the program are also in need of winter gear. Mittens and hats can be dropped off at Commerce Bank or Community Bank of Harrisonville through Dec. 2.
HELP offers Black Friday special For Black Friday, HELP Humane in Belton is hosting a two-day adoption special, beginning at 6 a.m. today. From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., senior pets and black cats 5 months and older will have their application fee waived. Both of these animals have a difficult time being noticed and getting their chance at their forever home, so we are promoting them on Friday morning, said Cyndi Dill, the shelters director. Quitmeier Law Firm of Kansas City is sponsoring the event. Those who sign up to be a shelter buddy will receive a complimentary gift. Blue Note Boosters hold poinsettia sale The Harrisonville High School Blue Note Boosters will hold a poinsettia sale for the Christmas season. Proceeds will benefit the 2011-2012 Blue Note Boosters budget. The cost per poinsettia will be $15, and those buying nine plants will get one free. Colors available will be red, pink and white, and the plants come in a 6-1/2 inch foil-covered pot, 18-20 inches tall. Delivery will be Thursday, Dec. 1. Journey through Bethlehem planned Journey through Bethlehem, a live nativity production, will be performed from 7-9 p.m. Fri., Dec. 9; and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11, at New Vision Church of the Nazarene, M-58 Highway and Sunrise Drive in Raymore. Presentations of the Christmas story begin every 15 minutes. The production will provide free holiday fun for the whole family. HBW to sponsor Christmas Homes Tour Christmas is near, and the Harrisonville Business Women of Missouris 14th Annual Christmas Homes Tour is in the planning stages. The event is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. The 2011 tour features five homes: the Whalen residence, an 1847 pre-Civil War home, at 105 N. Price in Harrisonville; and four contemporary homes in Pleasant Hill: the Atkins residence, 200 Breezeway; the Grant Home, 1309 Strictus St.; the Hamilton residence, 1511 Whispering Ridge; and the Zvacek home, 2200 Alexandria Ln. Tickets cost $10 and may be purchased at the Pleasant Hill Times, 126 First St., and at other locations in Harrisonville: Hawthorne Bank, 100 Plaza Dr.; Community Bank, 1503 N. M-291 Highway; Commerce Bank, 1301 Locust St.; and Stafford & Stafford Insurance, 801 S. Commercial St. Tickets may also be purchased at any of the homes on the day of the tour. Proceeds from this annual event supports the organizations general budget which includes Hope Haven, the annual spaghetti dinner and dance for the Cass County special population and other administrative and community expenses.
Belton to celebrate Christmas on Main Street Beltons Main Street will be celebrating Christmas on Main, Saturday Dec. 3. Santa will be making a stop at Taras Cafe from 2-4 p.m. Parents are invited to bring their cameras for photos. An annual tradition on Main Street is the Christmas Wreath silent auction. Donated wreaths are now on display at Taras Cafe. Bidding will end on Dec. 3, with proceeds going to help revitalize Main Street. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Belton Chamber of Commerce will hold a Soup and Chili Cook-off. More information is available from the Chamber office. Annual Chili Supper planned The Annual Youth Building Chili Supper and Girl Scout Ornament Sale Fundraiser will be held beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at 304 E. Wall in Harrisonville. There will be a Stuff the Bus coat, mitten and blanket drive, with the bus donated by Durham School Services. Proceeds from the ornament sale will be donated to Cass County Hope Haven.
Local Edward Jones office supports Blairs Foster Socks George W. Morse, financial advisor for Edward Jones at 108 E. Pearl St. in Harrisonville, is supporting the Blairs Foster Socks initiative. The goal is to help foster children in need of socks, and the drive is named in honor of Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane, who was killed July 4 by a stray bullet in Kansas City. The 11-year-olds mother and grandmother are branch administrators with Edward Jones. Her dream, and her Girl Scout Gold Award project, was to provide warm socks for children. Harrisonville students present music concerts The community is invited to upcoming music concerts presented by Harrisonville Schools students. The Harrisonville Middle School band will perform on Monday, Dec. 12 and the high school band will perform on Tuesday, Dec. 13. On Thursday, Dec. 15, the HMS and HHS choirs will present a joint concert. All performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Harrisonville High School Performing Arts Center and are free.
Harrisonville Chamber plans annual meeting The Harrisonville Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Meeting Dinner and Downline Derby from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Cass County Elks Lodge, 2402 N. M-291 Highway. Retired Cass County Historical Society Executive Director Carol Bohl will be presented as Educator of the Year, and 2012 Chamber officers will be installed following the buffet dinner. Library to discuss genealogical blogs Cindy Kalwei, avid genealogist and substitute librarian in the Genealogy Branch of the Cass County Library will share her top ten favorite genealogy blog sites during a class to held Saturday, Dec. 10, in the computer lab at the Harrisonville Library. The class will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Pre registration is required as there is limited seating. This hands-on computer class will offer one on one help but participants need to have some computer skills. Besides hearing about Kalweis favorite blogs, participants will learn what a blog is, how to use them, how to find other blogs and actually search blogs for their ancestors in this three-hour class. The class is open to all teens, adults and seniors who have a desire to find their ancestors. A fee of $2 covers the cost of lesson material. Cass Regional to host photos with Santa Cass Regional Medical Center will host Photos with Santa at Cass Regional, located at 2800 E. Rock Haven Rd. in Harrisonville on Saturday, Dec., from 10 a.m. until noon. Digital photos of Santa and loved ones will be taken in the Rotunda in front of the Christmas tree and e-mailed to participants. In order to receive photos, a valid e-mail address is needed. Mobile recycling set for Garden City The regularly scheduled mobile recycling event will be at the City Hall in the back parking lot, 102 N. 4th St., Garden City, this weekend. Royal Regiment presents Parents Night Out Harrisonville High Schools Royal Regiment band is Hosting Parents Night Out from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the districts Early Childhood Center.
