West Line Opry set for Tuesday evenings The West Line Opry will be held from 7-10 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at the West Line Community Center. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.
Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Banks annual Coats for Kids project. This year will mark the seventh anniversary for this event. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. In the years past, the program has raised more than $18,000 and donated more than 850 coats to children at 12 different elementary schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Raymore and Peculiar. To help in this effort, make a monetary donation at any of the banks five financial center locations in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Pearl St., Harrisonville, MO 64701. Associates will then purchase brand new coats from local retailers and deliver them to the children in need in time for the cold weather.
Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Join us with your ideas and learn how you can get involved in protecting water quality in our streams, aquifers, and water bodies throughout the watershed. Meetings are held at 4:45 p.m., the second Monday of each month at the office of PWSD No. 10 in Peculiar. Food 4 Thought donations sought The community is invited to help the Harrisonville Schools Food 4 Thought Backpack program by donating mittens and hats to be included in a December backpack. The Food 4 Thought Backpack program currently provides over 150 students in grades pre-K through high school with a backpack each weekend full of child-friendly, nutritious food. As the weather turns colder, many students served by the program are also in need of winter gear. Mittens and hats can be dropped off at Commerce Bank or Community Bank of Harrisonville through today.
Journey through Bethlehem planned Journey through Bethlehem, a live nativity production, will be performed from 7-9 p.m. Fri., Dec. 9; and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11, at New Vision Church of the Nazarene, M-58 Highway and Sunrise Drive in Raymore. Presentations of the Christmas story begin every 15 minutes. The production will provide free holiday fun for the whole family. Local Edward Jones office supports Blairs Foster Socks George W. Morse, financial advisor for Edward Jones at 108 E. Pearl St. in Harrisonville, is supporting the Blairs Foster Socks initiative. The goal is to help foster children in need of socks, and the drive is named in honor of Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane, who was killed July 4 by a stray bullet in Kansas City. The 11-year-olds mother and grandmother are branch administrators with Edward Jones. Her dream, and her Girl Scout Gold Award project, was to provide warm socks for children. Harrisonville students present music concerts The community is invited to upcoming music concerts presented by Harrisonville Schools students. The Harrisonville Middle School band will perform on Monday, Dec. 12 and the high school band will perform on Tuesday, Dec. 13. On Thursday, Dec. 15, the HMS and HHS choirs will present a joint concert. All performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Harrisonville High School Performing Arts Center and are free.
Library to discuss genealogical blogs Cindy Kalwei, avid genealogist and substitute librarian in the Genealogy Branch of the Cass County Library will share her top ten favorite genealogy blog sites during a class to held Saturday, Dec. 10, in the computer lab at the Harrisonville Library. The class will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Pre registration is required as there is limited seating. This hands-on computer class will offer one on one help but participants need to have some computer skills. Besides hearing about Kalweis favorite blogs, participants will learn what a blog is, how to use them, how to find other blogs and actually search blogs for their ancestors in this three-hour class. The class is open to all teens, adults and seniors who have a desire to find their ancestors. A fee of $2 covers the cost of lesson material. Mobile recycling set for Peculiar The regularly scheduled mobile recycling event will be held in Peculiar this weekend. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Peculiar location will be at the former Raymore Peculiar Freshman Center, 21001 S. School Road. Royal Regiment presents Parents Night Out Harrisonville High Schools Royal Regiment band is Hosting Parents Night Out from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the districts Early Childhood Center. Christmas Bazaar planned for Elks Lodge The first of what is planned to be an annual Christmas Bazaar will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Cass County Elks Lodge, 2400 N. DPACD offers holiday wreaths The Downtown Peculiar Arts & Culture District recently announced its Fifth Annual Wreath Sale. Wreaths, with some tiny trees thrown in for fun, will be available while they last through Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Peculiar Pharmacy at the intersection of Main and Broadway Streets in downtown Peculiar. Kidney disease classes offered Free Empower Kidney Disease classes are available from 5 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday through 2011 at four separate Kansas City area locations. On the second Tuesday of every month, a class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lees Summit for people who live in the southeastern area of greater Kansas City. Womens retreat planned Antioch Southern Baptist Church in Harrisonville will conduct a womens retreat entitled Leaving a Legacy Jan. 13-14, 2012. Deadline for registration is Dec. 31. Guest speaker Jill Savage from the Hearts at Home Ministry in Normal, Ill., will discuss how we make hundreds of unconcious choices that affect our relationships positively or negatively, and in order to invest in the people that mean the most to us, we have to make choices that bring life to our relationships. Santa to visit Elks Lodge Santa will be at the Cass County Elks Lodge No. 2791, 2402 N. M-291 Highway, Harrisonville, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. The event is open to the public. Digital photos will be taken and emailed to participants with a valid email address.
Garden City Lions host Christmas Tree Lighting The Garden City Lions Club will host its Seventh Annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Saturday, Dec. 10, at the community building. Caroling and a hayride is scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m., and the tree lighting is set for 6:30-7 p.m. The Sherwood Hgh School Chorus, directed by Charla Yoder; Coro Misto, directed by Kathy Grimes; and soloist Elizabeth Riggs will perform at 7. Santa Claus will visit with candy bags and door prizes. Refreshments will be served. This event is free to the public.
High Blue hosts Belly Dancing seminar The High Blue Wellness Center will offering a free sneak peek at its Belly Dancing program for anyone 14 years and older from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at the center, 16400 N. Mullen Road, Belton. The seminar is free. According to Jess Carey, recreation specialist, the seminar is designed for women who are interested in taking a Belly Dance class, as well as those who have previous Belly Dance training. Participants will have the chance to try out some of the basic fundamental movements and learn what it is like to take part in a Belly Dance class.
