West Line Opry set for Tuesday evenings The West Line Opry will be held from 7-10 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at the West Line Community Center. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.


Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Bank’s annual Coats for Kids project. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. In the years past, the program has raised more than $18,000 and donated more than 850 coats to children at 12 different elementary schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Raymore and Peculiar. To help in this effort, make a monetary donation at any of the bank’s five financial center locations in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Pearl St., Harrisonville, MO 64701.


Mobile recycling set for Drexel The regularly scheduled mobile recycling event will be held in Drexel this weekend. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Drexel location will be at the Drexel Community Building Parking Lot, 410 E. Bates. Royal Regiment presents Parents’ Night Out Harrisonville High School’s Royal Regiment band is Hosting Parents Night Out from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the district’s Early Childhood Center. Cost is $10 per child or $15 per family, with a snack provided. Call to sign up at 816-887-2557. Infants must have advanced reservations. Space is limited. Band members will also do gift wrapping.


Food 4 Thought donations sought The community is invited to help the Harrisonville Schools’ Food 4 Thought Backpack program by donating mittens and hats to be included in a December backpack. The Food 4 Thought Backpack program currently provides over 150 students in grades pre-K through high school with a backpack each weekend full of child-friendly, nutritious food. As the weather turns colder, many students served by the program are also in need of winter gear. Mittens and hats can be dropped off at Commerce Bank or Community Bank of Harrisonville through today.


Santa to visit Elks Lodge Santa will be at the Cass County Elks Lodge No. 2791, 2402 N. M-291 Highway, Harrisonville, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. The event is open to the public. Digital photos will be taken and emailed to participants with a valid email address.


DPACD offers holiday wreaths The Downtown Peculiar Arts & Culture District recently announced its Fifth Annual Wreath Sale. Wreaths, with some tiny trees thrown in for fun, will be available while they last through Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Peculiar Pharmacy at the intersection of Main and Broadway Streets in downtown Peculiar. Kidney disease classes offered Free Empower Kidney Disease classes are available from 5 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday through 2011 at four separate Kansas City area locations. On the second Tuesday of every month, a class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lee’s Summit for people who live in the southeastern area of greater Kansas City. Tuesday, Jan. 10, will be the next class at Truman Medical Center Lakewood. Call 816-842-0076 to register for these classes.


Women’s retreat planned Antioch Southern Baptist Church in Harrisonville will conduct a women’s retreat entitled “Leaving a Legacy” Jan. 13-14, 2012. Deadline for registration is Saturday, Dec. 31. High Blue hosts Belly Dancing seminar The High Blue Wellness Center will offering a free sneak peek at its Belly Dancing program for anyone 14 years and older from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at the center, 16400 N. Raymore announces winter blood drive The City of Raymore has partnered with Foxwood Springs Residents’ Association in sponsoring blood drives to benefit the Community Blood Center, with this quarter’s event scheduled for 1 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Foxwood Springs’ Holmes Hall. Anyone interested in donating at this blood drive should preregister online at www.savealifenow.org and use the sponsor code of “raymorecomm.” Walk-in donors will also be accepted. SWCD announces Board of Supervisor elections The Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District will be hold its election for Board of Supervisors at its Annual Banquet Dinner on Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Trade Fair Hall in Harrisonville. Voting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the USDA Office, located at 1000 West Wall St., Harrisonville, and polls will reopen at the banquet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Supervisor positions up for election are Area 2, the area north of M-2 Highway and East of U.S. 71; and Area 4, the area south of M-2 Highway and west of U.S. 71. Agricultural landowners or residents interested in running as a candidate should contact one of the following: Area 2, Jim Schrock, William Groll or Max Schmoll; Area 4, Ted Zellmer, Kevin Anderson or Kevin Iseman. These individuals make up the two nominating committees for the areas and are responsible for putting names on the ballot and answering any questions regarding the qualifications to be a supervisor and running for a supervisor position. Local Edward Jones office supports Blair’s Foster Socks George W. Morse, financial advisor for Edward Jones at 108 E. Pearl St. in Harrisonville, is supporting the Blair’s Foster Socks initiative. The goal is to help foster children in need of socks, and the drive is named in honor of Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane, who was killed July 4 by a stray bullet in Kansas City. The 11-year-old’s mother and grandmother are branch administrators with Edward Jones. Her dream, and her Girl Scout Gold Award project, was to provide warm socks for children. Cass County residents are urged to bring new socks to the Harrisonville office. Call 816-380-7491 with questions.


Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Join us with your ideas and learn how you can get involved in protecting water quality in our streams, aquifers, and water bodies throughout the watershed. Meetings are held at 4:45 p.m., the second Monday of each month at the office of PWSD No. 10 in Peculiar.
