Coats for Kids launches for seventh year It is time for Country Club Bank’s annual Coats for Kids project. Coats for Kids is a program reaching out to the public schools in our local communities. Working with school counselors, bank employees are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat. To help in this effort, make a monetary donation at any of the bank’s five financial center locations in Cass County, or make a check payable to Coats for Kids and mail to: Coats for Kids; 100 E. Kidney disease classes offered Free Empower Kidney Disease classes are available from 5 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday through 2011 at four separate Kansas City area locations. On the second Tuesday of every month, a class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lee’s Summit for people who live in the southeastern area of greater Kansas City. Tuesday, Jan. 10, will be the next class at Truman Medical Center Lakewood. Call 816-842-0076 to register for these classes.
Women’s retreat planned Antioch Southern Baptist Church in Harrisonville will conduct a women’s retreat entitled “Leaving a Legacy” Jan. 13-14, 2012. Deadline for registration is Saturday, Dec. 31. High Blue hosts Belly Dancing seminar The High Blue Wellness Center will offering a free sneak peek at its Belly Dancing program for anyone 14 years and older from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at the center, 16400 N. SWCD announces Board of Supervisor elections The Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District will be hold its election for Board of Supervisors at its Annual Banquet Dinner on Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Trade Fair Hall in Harrisonville. Voting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the USDA Office, located at 1000 West Wall St., Harrisonville, and polls will reopen at the banquet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Supervisor positions up for election are Area 2, the area north of M-2 Highway and East of U.S. 71; and Area 4, the area south of M-2 Highway and west of U.S. 71. Agricultural landowners or residents interested in running as a candidate should contact one of the following: Area 2, Jim Schrock, William Groll or Max Schmoll; Area 4, Ted Zellmer, Kevin Anderson or Kevin Iseman. These individuals make up the two nominating committees for the areas and are responsible for putting names on the ballot and answering any questions regarding the qualifications to be a supervisor and running for a supervisor position. Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Harrisonville Senior Citizens Housing plans stockholders meeting Harrisonville Senior Citizens Housing Inc. will hold its Annual Stockholders' Meeting at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, in the Community Building at Foxcroft, 200 Pheasant Dr., Harrisonville. To participate in the meeting and vote on the actions discussed, attendees must be a shareholder of at least one share. Raymore announces winter blood drive The City of Raymore has partnered with Foxwood Springs Residents’ Association in sponsoring blood drives to benefit the Community Blood Center, with this quarter’s event scheduled for 1 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Foxwood Springs’ Holmes Hall. Anyone interested in donating at this blood drive should preregister online at www.savealifenow.org and use the sponsor code of “raymorecomm.” Walk-in donors will also be accepted. Belton Parks registers for Home School PE Registration is now under way at the Belton Park Department for Home School PE winter sessions. The next session will be held at the High Blue Wellness Center, 16400 N. Mullen Road, Belton, from Jan. 4-25, 2012. Classes are scheduled for Wednesdays, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for the first child and $5 for each additional child in the same family. Jazz & Tap offered through Belton Parks The Belton Park Department will offer two dance classes for a 16-week session, running Jan. 13-May 4, 2012, for youth ages six to 12 years. Jazz & Tap, designed specifically for 6 to 10 year olds, will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Fridays. Ballet Strength & Style, designed for 8 to 12 year olds, will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Fridays Both classes are held at the High Blue Wellness Center, 16400 N. Mullen Road. The cost for each class is $140 for the spring session if registered by Jan. 6, 2012, with monthly payment plans available. The cost is $160 if registered after Jan. 6., 2012. Library conducts scrapbooking workshop The Genealogy Branch of Cass County Public Library will present a workshop entitled “Heritage Scrapbooking Workshop Using Photoshop Techniques.” Vicky Gray will present this two-part workshop on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, and Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in the Harrisonville Library computer lab. This is hands-on computer class – computer skills are necessary. There is a $5 fee for class supplies and handouts. Bring photographs to the class. Registration is required as seating is limited. VFW plans boiled shrimp dinner The VFW Men’s Auxiliary Post 4409 in Harrisonville will hold its boiled shrimp dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at the VFW Hall, 1804 N. Commercial St., Harrisonville. One pound of shrimp will be served for $12, all you can eat shrimp is $20 and a plate of pork roast is $8.50.
Freeman Cemetery Association to meet The Annual Meeting of the Freeman Cemetery Association will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at the Freeman Community Club.
St. Peter’s plans annual gumbo dinner St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 400 W. Wall, Harrisonville, will hold its annual gumbo dinner from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at the church. The menu includes New Orleans style gumbo, red beans and rice, french bread, bread pudding, wine, coffee or tea. The price is $9 per person. This year’s honoree will be the late Lee Findley, and proceeds will benefit the Harrisonville Summer Backpack program.
