Kidney disease classes offered Free Empower Kidney Disease classes are available from 5 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday through 2011 at four separate Kansas City area locations. On the second Tuesday of every month, a class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lees Summit for people who live in the southeastern area of greater Kansas City. Tuesday, Feb. 14, will be the next class at Truman Medical Center Lakewood. Call 816-842-0076 to register for these classes.
SWCD announces Board of Supervisor elections The Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District will be hold its election for Board of Supervisors at its Annual Banquet Dinner on Friday, March 16, at the Trade Fair Mall in Harrisonville. Voting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the USDA Office, located at 1000 West Wall St., Harrisonville, and polls will reopen at the banquet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Supervisor positions up for election are Area 2, the area north of M-2 Highway and East of U.S. 71; and Area 4, the area south of M-2 Highway and west of U.S. 71. Agricultural landowners or residents interested in running as a candidate should contact one of the following: Area 2, Jim Schrock, William Groll or Max Schmoll; Area 4, Ted Zellmer, Kevin Anderson or Kevin Iseman. These individuals make up the two nominating committees for the areas and are responsible for putting names on the ballot and answering any questions regarding the qualifications to be a supervisor and running for a supervisor position. Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Meetings are held at 4:45 p.m., the second Monday of each month at the office of PWSD No. 10 in Peculiar. St. Peters plans annual gumbo dinner St. Peters Episcopal Church, 400 W. Wall, Harrisonville, will hold its annual gumbo dinner from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at the church. The menu includes New Orleans style gumbo, red beans and rice, french bread, bread pudding, wine, coffee or tea. The price is $9 per person. This years honoree will be the late Lee Findley, and proceeds will benefit the Harrisonville Summer Backpack program.
Cattlemens Association to meet The Cass and Jackson County Cattlemens Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Community Center on North Jefferson Parkway in Harrisonville.
Womens Health Services dates set for Cass County The Womens Health Services Belton clinics will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18; Thursday, Jan. 19; and Tuesday, Jan. 24. The clinic is located at 119 Congress St. Appointments are also available for supply pickup. The Harrisonville clinic, located at 200 N. Oakland, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25. Participants must call for an appointment and cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Services include comprehensive exams such as clinical breast exams, Pap smears, pelvic, HIV and sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, reproductive and contraceptive counseling as well as the issuance of contraceptive supplies. Charges for the services are based on a sliding scale according to household income. Persons desiring appointments should contact the Womens Health Services division of the West Central Missouri Community Action Agency. Blood drive planned at Our Lady of Lourdes Celebrate National Donor Month by donating blood at a blood drive planned for Monday, Jan. 16, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2700 E. Library to host eBook event The Cass County Public Librarys Harrisonville branch will host an eBook event at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. The demonstration will cover the different eBook readers and devices, preparing devices to check out eBooks and the process for checking out and downloading eBooks. Supported devices include the Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad, Android and more. The event will be held at the library, 400 E. Mechanic, Harrisonville. For more information, call 816-884-3483.
Hope Haven to host annual meeting Hope Haven of Cass County, Inc., a shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault and their children, will hold its annual meeting and election at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Gregorys Restaurant, 407 W. Pine (across from Sonic) in Raymore. The director, officers of the board, and committee chairs will present annual reports. A buffet will be provided at 6 p.m. Cost for the buffet is $12 for adults and children age 10 or older and $6 for children age 9 and under, for those wishing to dine at their own expense prior to the meeting. The public is invited to attend.
VFW plans boiled shrimp dinner The VFW Mens Auxiliary Post 4409 in Harrisonville will hold its boiled shrimp dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the VFW Hall, 1804 N. Commercial St., Harrisonville. One pound of shrimp will be served for $12, all you can eat shrimp is $20 and a plate of pork roast is $8.50.
Cass Regional hosts diabetes support group Cass Regional Medical Center will host a Diabetes Support Group on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Cass Regional, 2800 E. Rock Haven Rd., Harrisonville. The group will meet in Conference Rooms 1 and 2, which are located directly inside the main entrance of the hospital. The meetings will cover topics surrounding diabetes and offer ways to gain a better understanding of the disease. These meetings are free to anyone who wants to attend. Collectors Office to host retirement party A retirement party will be held for Donna Schmidt of the Cass County Collectors Office from 2 to 4 p.m. today. Ministers Fellowship meets The Belton Ministers Fellowship will meet at noon for lunch and fellowship at Carnegie Village on Jan. 17. They will sponsor a community service on Jan. 16 for Christian Unity on Martin Luther Kings birthday at St. Sabina Catholic Church, 700 Trevis Ave., Belton. The service is set for 7 p.m.
Archie Methodist men to host soup and chili supper The Archie United Methodist Men will host their annual soup and chili supper to support youth activities from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Archie United Methodist Church, Ohio and Chestnut streets. Chili and soup will be served along with hot dogs with all the fixings, dessert and coffee or tea. Offerings will be accepted.
Free tax help offered Free tax help will be offered at the Harrisonville Public Library from 9 a.m.; to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays at the Belton Public Library beginning Feb. 6. The service is for walk-in clients of low to moderate income. Some forms will not be covered.
Garden City Cemetery Association meets The annual meeting of the Garden City Cemetery Association will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Christian Church in Garden City.
Masonic Breakfast planned Cass Lodge No. 147 will hold its monthly Masonic Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Historic Masonic Lodge, 405 N. Independence, Harrisonville. The public is invited for the all-you-can-eat breakfast, which includes biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs, pancakes, fruit, coffee and orange juice. A $5 donation is suggested, and kids 5 and under eat free.

Belton Fire Department seeks past firefighters In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Belton Fire Department in 2013, organizers are seeking information on anyone who has ever served on the department. If you or anyone you know has been a member of the department the department would like to hear from you. Organizers would like the name, address, phone number, email address, and years served (if known) of everyone possible. An event is being planned for 2013, and the department would especially like to be able to notify all past members. Daddy-Daughter dance planned in Belton Registrations are now under way for the Belton Park Departments Fourth Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, for girls ages four to 13 years with dads of all ages. The dance, which is run by the Belton Park Department, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Wellness Center, 16400 N. Mullen Road. The early bird fee is $30 per couple if registered by Jan. 28 and $5 for each additional daughter. After Jan. 28, the cost is $40 per couple, and $5 for each additional daughter. According to Jess Carey, recreation specialist, this popular dance gives dads a chance to show their little princess just how wonderful she is. Dancers will be treated to a live DJ, professional photographer, dancing, snacks, fun contests, prizes, a flower for each girl and lots of memories. Kids night out set for Jan. 21 Parents are invited to bring the kids to Kids Night Out at the High Blue Wellness Center for a fun-filled evening of games, music and fun on Saturday, Jan. 21. The fun runs from 5:30-10 p.m. Register by Jan. 16 and the cost is $15. After that, the fee is $20. According to Jess Carey, recreation specialist, this is a chance for kids to have fun with friends while parents enjoy a night out. The night offers kids swimming, gym games, dodgeball, crafts, pizza, prizes and more. This promises to be fun for all ages and an opportunity to meet new friends, Carey said. We will keep the kids grouped by age to make sure the activities are appropriate for everyone. Belton Historical Society meets The Belton Historical Society will hold a membership meeting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the museum, 512 Main St., Belton. This is an open meeting, and the general public is welcome.
