To the Editor:

Definition of school spirit: school spirit is emotional support for one’s educational institution (in our case, Belton High School). This can apply to any type of school, from grade schools to universities, and including all school events – football, softball, theater, etc.

It can be manifested in the exhibition of school colors in dress and decoration, attendance at athletic events, or verbally in the form of chants or cheers.

I was at the Belton-Winnetonka basketball game when I realized the alumni were out numbering us. I realized tonight that there were about 10 students participating in what the definition said were “chants” or “cheers.”

Understandably, some people might be busy and can’t make it, including other athletes that are training and competing. But I know for a fact there are many more people capable of coming to these events. So my question is, who is going to quit saying Belton stinks at sports (and everything else), try for once, make a difference and turn around programs?

Because lately, people saying that we do stink in our school are people that don’t participate in these activites when they might actually have potential to make a better team.

I’m not one siding sports because I realize theater is doing excellent and has large audiences, but wouldn’t you like to double the crowd because more people have school spirit and want to go? Basketball players, how many times did you look up in the stands and notice all the empty seats? That, my friends, is called a lack of school spirit. Football players we have an amazing stadium but once again, you guessed it, empty bleachers.

So to conclude my lesson on school spirit, fight for the purple and gold – go Pirates!

To the Editor:

My first Democrat-Missourian delivery was the Dec. 23, 2012, edition that included a letter from U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler. Since I am new to the area I was excited to see what was on her mind and what insights she would share. The headline indicated that I would get a healthy dose of both.

Here is what I actually learned from Vicky. A couple of paragraphs of political update followed by several column inches with the good news that our Savior, Jesus Christ, came to earth over 2,000 years ago to save us from our sins.

In order to help us all with the whole separation of church and state thing maybe you should give Vicky a 25-word political column and a 1,500 word religion column. Please headline each column appropriately.

Daryl Pitts, Belton

To the Editor:

In the Jan. 6 issue, (new county commissioner-designate) Luke Scavuzzo says, “a lot of confidence has been lost in what the county is doing.”

Not a lot. All of it, quite some time ago.
