Belton High School debate team wins big in Harrisonville
The Pirate Debate-Forensic Team captured nine first place honors along with a total of 37 trophies, winning the Harrisonville Tournament, Dec. 17, 2011. The victory was the largest tournament win for the Pirates, outscoring runner-up Platte County 164-63 points.
The debate squad won every debate trophy with one exception. Jessica and Rachel Jacobs won the Public Forum division. Samuel Crosby went undefeated in the Lincoln-Douglas debate style. Chris Kennell and Zac Theiss won the Cross-Examination category.
Additional debate winners included: second place in Public Forum - Kenna Golden and Mallory Keller; third place to Bethany Sveom and Amanda Hadlock; and fourth place to Taylor Lind and Becky Worrell. Kaneisha Giles took second place in Lincoln-Douglas while Jessica Dolan came in third. Shelby Ditterline and Daniel Fenimore placed second in Cross-Examination. Jackie Daut and Maddie Elliston came in third.
Belton dominated Student Congress winning all but one trophy. In the Friday session, Jacob Armond won the title followed by Thomas Baumgartner in second, Triston Rodgers in third, and Brandi Vaughn in fourth. Theiss won the Saturday session followed by Crosby in second place, and Asia Andrews in fourth.
The Pirate speakers won four performance events highlighted by Kayla Lahn in Prose Reading, Emily Jarvis in Storytelling, Zach Thomas and Austin Woodward in Improvisational Duet Acting, and Rodgers and Sveom in Duo Interpretation.
Belton had three runners-up: Miranda Cobern in Dramatic Interpretation, Ashley Jones in Prose Reading, and Golden in Poetry Reading.
Four third places were awarded to Belton: Amber Kawakami and Trisha Nelson in Duo Interpretation. Nelson also came in third place in both Storytelling and Dramatic Interpretation.
Six Pirates received fourth place honors: Matt Black in Extemporaneous Speaking, Baumgartner in Radio Announcing, Hadlock in Storytelling, Dolan in Dramatic Interpretation, and Golden and Keller in Improvisation Duet Acting.
Belton rounded out its victory with fifth place wins by Emily Dolan in Humorous Interpretation and Worrell in Extemporaneous Speaking. Sixth place was awarded to Mitch Mullvain in Extemporaneous Speaking and Jones in Humorous Interpretation.
The Pirates ended the first half of their season with a 26th-place national ranking by the National Forensic League.
