Kidney disease classes offered Free Empower Kidney Disease classes are available from 5 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday through 2011 at four separate Kansas City area locations. On the second Tuesday of every month, a class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lee’s Summit for people who live in the southeastern area of greater Kansas City. Tuesday, Feb. 14, will be the next class at Truman Medical Center Lakewood. Call 816-842-0076 to register for these classes.


Watershed Alliance to meet The South Grand River Watershed Alliance is a local, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote water quality throughout the South Grand River Watershed. Meetings are held at 4:45 p.m., the second Monday of each month at the office of PWSD No. 10 in Peculiar. Cass Regional hosts diabetes support group Cass Regional Medical Center will host a Diabetes Support Group on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Cass Regional, 2800 E. Rock Haven Rd., Harrisonville. The group will meet in Conference Rooms 1 and 2, which are located directly inside the main entrance of the hospital. The meetings will cover topics surrounding diabetes and offer ways to gain a better understanding of the disease. These meetings are free to anyone who wants to attend. The meeting in February will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, to coincide with Cass Regional’s Rehabilitation Services Open House, which takes place from 4-6 p.m. The Open House will feature a Hearth Healthy Cook-Off; A1C lab draw (for a small fee), mini health screens, educational material and door prizes. Free tax help offered Free tax help will be offered at the Harrisonville Public Library from 9 a.m.; to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays at the Belton Public Library beginning Feb. 6. The service is for walk-in clients of low to moderate income. Some forms will not be covered.


Belton Fire Department seeks past firefighters In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Belton Fire Department in 2013, organizers are seeking information on anyone who has ever served on the department. If you or anyone you know has been a member of the department the department would like to hear from you. Organizers would like the name, address, phone number, email address, and years served (if known) of everyone possible. An event is being planned for 2013, and the department would especially like to be able to notify all past members. If you know of past members who are now deceased, organizers would like to know that also so that information can be documented. Please contact the following people: Dep. Daddy-Daughter dance planned in Belton Registrations are now under way for the Belton Park Department’s Fourth Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, for girls ages 4 to 13 years with “dads” of all ages. The dance, which is run by the Belton Park Department, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Wellness Center, 16400 N. Mullen Road. The early bird fee is $30 per couple if registered by Jan. 28 and $5 for each additional daughter. After Jan. 28, the cost is $40 per couple, and $5 for each additional daughter. According to Jess Carey, recreation specialist, “this popular dance gives dads a chance to show their little princess just how wonderful she is.” Dancers will be treated to a live DJ, professional photographer, dancing, snacks, fun contests, prizes, a flower for each girl and lots of memories. Genealogy class set for Harrisonville library Long-time genealogist Linda Cox will instruct a hands-on class for beginners from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 28, in the Computer Lab at Harrisonville Library. This class will give participants the tools needed to get started tracing a family tree. Participants need to bring what family information they have. They will receive individual help on beginning their research. This class is free and open to the public. Some computer skills are needed. Seating is limited, and reservations may be made by calling the Genealogy Branch at 816-884-6285 or emailing robertsj@casscolibrary.org.


Harrisonville launches Major Saver drive Major Saver restaurant discount cards are now on sale, and this year, in addition to the traditional in-person sales, supporters may choose from more 50 communities’ cards on-line. Through on-line sales, parents, family members, and friends can purchase any of the 57 Major Saver cards available including Harrisonville, Blue Springs, Independence, North Kansas City, Warrensburg, Raymore-Peculiar and more. On-line sales will be credited to Harrisonville Schools and to the student that the buyer is supporting. Cards purchased on-line will be mailed to the buyer. To purchase a card on-line, go to www.majorsaver.com. The Harrisonville cards include buy one, get one free deals for 15 local restaurants and attractions. Harrisonville and Lee’s Summit cards may also be purchased on-line. The cards, which are valid for one year, are $10 each and can be purchased from any Harrisonville Schools kindergarten-eighth grade student through Jan. 27. Cards can also be purchased at the Administrative Offices, 503 S. Lexington, through Feb. 3. Proceeds from the sale of the Major Saver cards are split equally between the individual schools and the Harrisonville Public School Foundation. The Foundation will use its portion of the proceeds to fund its programming including teacher grants, early childhood education initiatives, and teacher scholarships. VFW plans boiled shrimp dinner The VFW Men’s Auxiliary Post 4409 in Harrisonville will hold its boiled shrimp dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the VFW Hall, 1804 N. Commercial St., Harrisonville. One pound of shrimp will be served for $12, all you can eat shrimp is $20 and a plate of pork roast is $8.50.


Boy Scouts to host veterans Boy Scout Trooop 100, Harrisonville, will host a veterans appreciation dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church, 2600 E. Mechanic. Ham and beans, chili, a drink and dessert will be on the menu, all free of charge for veterans. Scouts will provide entertainment as well. Library hosts community reading project Cass County Public Library introduces this year’s community read initiative, “On The Same Page.” The purpose of a community reading project is to read, think, talk, listen and grow. It is a way to connect communities by reading the same book and initiating a dialogue about it. The program runs from Jan. 30 through April 14. The selected title is “Ape House” by Sara Gruen, the author of “Water for Elephants.” Patrons can pick up a copy of the book at any Cass County Public Library branch. Three group discussions and one live online discussion forum are scheduled. A patron who participates in a group discussion or the online discussion will be eligible to win a Kindle e-reader. The Kindle is being purchased with funds generated from the book sale at Northern Resource Center – no tax dollars are being used. The dates and times of the discussion groups are: Wednesday, Feb. 29, 6:30 p.m. at Northern Resource Center in Belton; Wednesday, March 14, 1 p.m. at the Drexel Branch; and Saturday, April 14, 10 a.m. at the Harrisonville Branch. The online discussion forum is Thursday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. The Website is www.casscolibrary.org/form.


Basketball teams join together in honor of alumnus The Harrisonville High School and Pleasant Hill High School girls’ basketball teams are joining together to fight cancer in support of a former HHS student. HHS 2011 graduate Sara Clarke is fighting Ewing’s Sarcoma. The Thursday, Feb. 2, game between the Wildcats and Chicks will feature several activities to help raise funds for Clarke. Planned activities include T-shirt sales, ice cream cone sales, halftime contests and an iPad raffle. Fans are encouraged to wear pink. Players will also wear pink shoelaces and hair ribbons to show support for Clarke. The games will be at Harrisonville High School with the freshman game beginning at 4:30 p.m. and the junior varsity and varsity games to follow.


Scouts host chili luncheon, bake sale Boy Scout Troop 510, Belton, is hosting a chili lunch with fresh baked desserts to be auctioned off for Super Bowl parties at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Belton Christian Church, Airway and Westover Road, Belton. This fundraiser is needed to buy new tents and other equipment to prepare for new scouts who will be entering the growing troop.


Keller Williams collecting art materials Keller Williams Realty, Belton, is collecting art materials for Cass County Head Start. Head Start children, ages 3-5, are in need of art supplies, including crayons, markers, colored pencils, play dough, glue, glitter and a variety of media to color on (no coloring books, please). Donations may be turned into the Keller Williams Realty Southland Office, 1800 E. North Ave., Belton, between now and the end of January.


Elks Gun Show set for mid-February The Cass County Elks Club, 2402 N. M-291, Harrisonville, will host its annual Gun and Knife Show from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at the club. Admission is $5 for adults. Children 10 and under will be admitted free, along with military personnel and police officers in uniform. The venue is smoke-free, and 24-hour security will be on hand. Hartzler’s office to host open house The Harrisonville office of U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 1909 N. Commercial. Staff members Shaelyn McClanahan and Kathleen Midgett will be available to discuss concerns and hear ideas as well as give tours of the office. Refreshments will be served. NARFE meets Feb. 3 The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1012, will hold a luncheon meeting at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in Holmes Hall, Foxwood Springs Living Center, 1500 W. Garden City recycling event scheduled The regularly scheduled mobile recycling event will be held in Garden City Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28 and 29, at City Hall, 102 N. Fourth St., in the back parking lot. The event is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each of those days. Belton veterinarians host open house The Belton Veterinary Center Dog and Cat Hospital, 1001 E. North Ave., Belton, will hold an open house event from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. The business is celebrating new ownership. The open house offers an opportunity to meet doctors and support staff, tour the facility, win door prizes and meet doctors and support staff. Quartet to perform at Cleveland Christian Church A quartet consisting of Sylvia and Eldon Landis, Dale Endicott and Chuck Yates will perform a program of gospel music at the Cleveland Christian Church, Third and Main streets, Cleveland, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29. There will also be opportunities for a sing-along of the audience’s favorite hymns. Light refreshments and visiting will be offered after the program.
