January 27 Letter to the editor
To the Editor:
Recently, it has become popular in certain political circles to pose the ultimate gotcha question, What would Jesus do?
It is my opinion that, from his Jan. 20 letter to the Democrat Missourian, one reader is apparently not familiar with Matthew 26, which describes how Jesus and His disciples met in what might be referred to as a back room.
I do not remember any mention of Reuters, the AP or the Jerusalem Daily News being present at the time, but it has been reported that there was at least one former tax man among them. As I remember, Jesus and His disciples were maligned as being rabble and trouble makers. The them guys of the past.
You will have to forgive me here as I consider myself to be only a meat and potatoes Christian, but I think that Matthew 26 might answer the readers question regarding what Jesus might have done had he posed it in that context.
I, for one, consider myself to be a proud evangelical, committed to my Christian faith, aligned with the Tea Party and remotely and suspiciously aligned with the Republican Party.
However, I do not consider myself to be a rabid supporter of any political party or scion that selfishly ignores the Constitution or any effort to undermine the religious underpinnings of these United States. While sharing ideas and educating is beneficial, do any of you understand that the hypocrisy of unilateral and unsubstantiated rants from the one trick ponies among us not only undermines the credibility of the source while confusing others, but contributes to the further division which currently exists among us and weakens us as a nation? Abraham Lincoln said it best, A house divided against itself cannot stand.
In closing, and for the benefit of the reader and others like him, let me take this opportunity to remind them that some of those that are the subject of their attack with associated rhetoric are not some imaginary creatures living in the deep woods and that some just might be friends, relatives and neighbors.
I imagine that some might even read the Democrat Missourian on occasion.
Think about it.
