Since 1976, the Drexel boys have not taken home the Archie Tournament championship trophy. Until this year.
The Bobcats clawed their way through Lone Jack 60-53, to capture the tournament title in the game held Jan. 28.
“We played really solid,” Drexel senior forward Blake Seba said. “It was a whole team effort. We had a couple of mental lapses, but in the end, we just came through the mistakes. Lone Jack is a really good team.”
The Mules are led by 6-foot, 8-inch senior forward Jake Suhr, but Drexel managed to hold Suhr to only 15 points, with help from Drexel’s own 6-8 senior center Chris Wilson.
“I think we did a pretty good job,” Seba said. “(Suhr) is a good player. He’s a good kid. I give props to him.”
Drexel got off to a slow start, with Lone Jack ahead at 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Bobcats fired up, outscoring the Mules 16-9.
In the third quarter, Lone Jack fought back after a three-pointer from Drexel’s Cody Russell. With two quick baskets, the Mules closed the gap to 34-30. Drexel’s CJ Bolton retaliated with a three-pointer and a shot to give the Bobcats a 39-30 advantage, but Lone Jack had the final say, scoring a three-pointer and a basket of their own to make the score 39-35 going into the final eight minutes of play.
But in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats roared back with a 11-0 run to lead 50-35 and kept fighting to seal the 60-53 victory.
“This was a very big win for the Drexel boys,” Drexel head coach Dennis Bolton said. “...They played very well and were able to do the things we had worked on. This game really showed how difficult we are as a team to guard when all are playing well. We have kids that can score from the three, we have kids that can take it off the bounce and we have kids that can score from the inside. When we are all clicking, we are going to be a pretty tough team.”
“I think we just played as a whole team,” Seba added. “That’s the main thing.”
Drexel was led in scoring by Seba with 16 points, followed by CJ Bolton with 14 points and Russell with 12 points. Wilson added 10 points, Trevor Cooley netted six points and Javyn Johnston had two points.
Both Seba and CJ Bolton were named to the all-tournament team.
In the semifinals Jan. 26, the Bobcats slipped past Barstow 58-57, leading 30-22 at halftime and 45-40 at the end of the third quarter.
CJ Bolton had 21 points and Cooley added 15 points. Russell had eight points, Justin Thomas netted three points and Johnston had two points.
