Belton firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 16400 block of Spring Valley Road at 1:42 p.m. July 6.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke visible from the front door and found the residents outside. Firefighters made a quick knock-down of the fire which was located in the basement.
Because of the extreme heat, mutual-aid assistance was requested from South Metro Fire District, West Peculiar Fire District and Grandview Fire Department.
One resident was transported to an area hospital with smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured. Several pets were rescued from the house as well including a dog which was transported to a local vet by Belton Animal Control. There were no working smoke alarms in the house.
Belton Fire Marshal Jason Webb reminds everyone to make sure they have a working smoke alarm on every level of their home.
“A working smoke alarm provides homeowners with the early warning necessary to get out alive” Webb said. “Thankfully, the residents discovered the fire quickly and called 911, but that isn’t always the case.”
The investigation into the cause in on-going, but is being looked at as accidental at this time.
