Chili cook-off

The Peculiar Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their first People’s Choice Chili Cook-Off at the Harvest Moon Festival Saturday, Oct. 27. Tasting will be 2-3 p.m., and an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Chamber of Commerce annual scholarship and Boys and Girls State Sponsorship. Entry registration is required by Oct. 19.

Fall festival

Eagle Creek Church will be hosting an afternoon of family fun 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Mill-Walk Mall in Harrisonville. There will be hayrides, games, inflatibles, popcorn, face painting, crafts, and a trunk-or-treat.

Women’s health clinic

The Women’s Health Services Harrisonville clinic will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, at 200 N. Oakland St., Harrisonville. Belton clinics will be held Nov. 7, 13, 15, 21, 27 and 29, at 119 Congress St. Participants must call for an appointment and cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Trunk-or-Treat

A Harrisonville-wide Trunk-or-Treat event will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28,on the Historic Harrisonville Square. Participants of all ages are invited to dress up in their Halloween costumes and enjoy Trick-or-Treating before dark. Admission is free, but all guests are encouraged to bring at least one can of food for the local food pantry. Parking is available in city lots south of Wall Street and east of the square.

Learn about goats, sheep

Jeff Yearington of the Lincoln University Small Farm Outreach Program will be at the Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, to share about how to keep goats and sheep happy and healthy.

Halloween festival

Candy buy-back

Smiles Unlimited, 103 Congress St., Belton, will be hosting Operation Candy Buy Back 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1. Smiles Unlimited will pay you $1 per pound of unopened candy that is brought in (5 lb. maximum per child). Candy will be donated to military troops through Operation Gratitude.

The Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Public Library will be hosting “Teen Latte Writers’ Group” every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. in November, beginning Nov. 1. Enjoy a hot beverage while sharing ideas with other teen writers and learning how to get published.

Tate Stevens watch party

The public is invited to help cheer for Belton native Tate Stevens on the X Factor at a watch party every Wednesday and Thursdays for the live shows beginning Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Belton High School Freshmen Center Commons. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free, but a donation of kid-friendly, non-perishable food item is appreciated. T-shirts and concessions will be available to benefit local children. Ham N’ Bean dinner

The Harrisonville United Methodist Women’s Ham N’ Bean dinner and bake sale will be 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 4:30 -7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. The event will be held at 2600 E. Mechanic St. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Deliveries available at noon (816-380-3424).

Rent-a-scout

The Boy Scouts of Troop 3 will be available to help with minor housekeeping chores Nov. 3 and 10. Scouts are able to clean up yards or flowerbeds, or assist with cleaning out a garage/basement, or paint something. The scouts are raising money for camp and a high adventure trip for next year. Proceeds from booth fee will be donated to Harrisonville High School Senior Max Galeassi who is battling cancer. Senior Mania will host concessions. The Harrisonville High School Class of 1986 is planning a 26th reunion on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at Harold’s Smokehouse Restaurant, 27500 E. State Rt. 2, Freeman. The VFW Men’s Auxiliary Post 4409 will host a boiled shrimp dinner 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. Cost is $12 for 1 lb. of shrimp; $20 for all-you-can-eat shrimp; or $8.50 for pork roast. Open to the public.

Church anniversary

Cornerstone Baptist Church, 904 S. Madison, Raymore, will be celebrating their 19th anniversary in the community 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The Cass County Public Library is partnering with Metropolitan Community College to offer introductory computer classes at the Harrisonville branch. Class meet every other Thursdays. Classes are free, and no registration is required. The next session will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m.

The Downtown Peculiar Arts & Culture District will be hosting a Handcrafted Holiday Arts & Fine Crafts show, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Brierly Hall, 163 W. Center St., Peculiar. Transition fair

The Cass County Transition Coordinators invite families of Belton, Raymore-Peculiar, Cass-Midway, Pleasant Hill, and Harrisonville school districts the annual Cass County Transition Fair Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6-8 p.m, at Harrisonville High School. Representatives from local and regional agencies specializing in providing services to individuals and families with special needs will be available to give information and answer questions in the Harrisonville High School Multi-purpose Room. Included in those agencies are: Vocational Rehabilitation, Life Care Planning, Pathways Community Behavioral Health, CASCO Area Workshop, Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City, and The Whole Person, MPACT and many more. Additionally, there will be four breakout sessions for students and families to choose from on specific topics, such as guardianship and vocational support and training.

The Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Public Library will be hosting a toddler storytime on Wednesdays, through Nov. 14, at 9 a.m. The storytime will include approximately 20 minutes of stories, music and finger plays for toddlers ages 18-36 months. The Harrisonville branch of the Cass County Library is hosting a Writer’s Club that meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 6 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with other writers, share writing tips, practice with writing prompts, critique other people’s work, and more. The Belton High School Class of 1973 and 1974 invites all Belton alumni, friends and family, to join them on a seven-day Caribbean cruise. The cruise will set sail from Galveston, Texas, aboard the “Carnival Magic.” The Ports of Call are Key West, Fl., Freeport and Nassau, Bahamas, Jan. 13-20, 2013.
