The Sherwood wrestling team started out their season on a good note, winning their own Sherwood Dual Tournament Dec. 1.

“For our first match of the year, I was really pleased with the way the kids wrestled,” Sherwood head coach Jim Gurney said. “Of course, we saw lots of things we can improve on, but it’s early and we’ll get those things fixed.”

Nine schools competed in the event and Sherwood won all five of its duals for the victory.

Sherwood defeated Lone Jack 68-12, took down Pembroke Hill 62-12, beat South Holt 66-12, defeated El Dorado Springs 42-36 and beat Wentworth Military Academy 48-28.

Several Marksmen also went undefeated during the tournament, including Collin Atkinson (132 pounds), Alex Vestal (152), Hunter Davis (160), Curtis Quick (170) and Landon Howard (220).

“I was just so impressed with the overall team intensity and enthusiasm,” Gurney said. “We had some freshmen and first-year wrestlers really come up big when we needed them. Now, we just have to build on this momentum and continue to improve every time we step on the mat.”
