Police investigate deadly accident near Garden City

Victim fails to yield to oncoming vehicle

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a 66-year-old man died Dec. 13 in a morning accident near Garden City.

The accident occurred at 8:40 a.m.

Jackie G. Powell, of Garden City, was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 northbound on Sycamore Grove Road when he was struck by a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan on Missouri 7 Highway when he failed to yield to the oncoming vehicle in the southbound lane.

After impact, Powell’s truck slid off into the median and the minivian came to rest in the left lane of traffic.

Powell was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office, along with the Highway Patrol, responded to the accident.

Anthony D. Wilson, of Overland Park, Kan., the driver of the minivan, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by EMS to Research Medical Center in Kansas City.

Police closed a portion of the highway following the two-vehicle accident, but all lanes reopened in both directions at 11 a.m.
