Students at Harrisonville McEowen Elementary School raised $3,111 to help in the fight against heart disease.

The students participated in the Hoops for Heart event at the school Dec. 5. Fifty-four fourth and fifth graders collected pledges for the event. The participating students took part in various activities that put their basketball skills to the test including Hot Shot Blitz and Fire Away.

The monies raised will be donated directly to the American Heart Association. Fourth grader Riley Mathew was the top fundraiser collecting over $200 in pledges.

Over the last nine years, McEowen has raised over $20,000 for the AHA. This year’s total was the highest in the nine years of participation.

The annual event is organized by McEowen Physical Education teacher Dave Hix.
