Bobby Joe Morris

June 23, 1937 - Feb. 20, 2013

Bobby Joe Morris, 75, of Harrisonville, was born June 23, 1937, in England, Ark., the son of Elbert and Jewell Lee (Fur) Morris. He died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville.

On June 7, 1957, Bobby was united in marriage to Mary Dell Romine in Kansas City.

Bobby was employed 31 years for General Motors at the BPO Fairfax Plant, Kansas City, Kan., until his retirement on March 1, 1993, and later was employed at New Castle Homes, Harrisonville, where he flagged and set up modular homes. He was a Marine veteran. Bobby was a faithful member of Abiding Love Baptist Church, Harrisonville, where he served as deacon and member of the choir, and was a member of Local #31 UAW. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, yard work, putting out a big garden, traveling and blue grass music. Bobby will be remembered for being a great husband and for his wit. He had moved to Harrisonville in 1978.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Thomas, Jerry and James Morris.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Mary D. Morris, of the home; a son, Gary Morris, St. Louis; three grandchildren, Travis, Zachary and Jessica; seven great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Kenneth Pettit; two sisters, Sharon Hearing and Kathy Pettit, all of Ola, Ark.; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were Feb. 28 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with burial in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Abiding Love Baptist Church Building Fund, Harrisonville.

Pauline Andona Ashcroft, 92, of Pleasant Hill, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at her home.

Cremation has been accorded. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Genevieve Lear Creighton

Dec. 22, 1919 - Feb. 23, 2013

Genevieve Lear Creighton, 93, of Raymore, was born Dec. 22, 1919, the only child of Carl McKinley and Dora Emma (Lear) Coover. She died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Foxwood Springs Living Center, Raymore.

On Jan. 7, 1940, Genevieve was united in marriage to Melville Rodgers Creighton in Urich.

Genevieve was a 1938 graduate of Urich High School. While Melville served his country in WWII, she was employed as an inspector of cartridges at Lake City Ordinance Plant and then as a tool grinder at Pratt and Whitney Plant until the end of the war. In 1953, when Melville took a job with State Farm Insurance, she became his secretary and enjoyed accompanying her husband to the company’s national conventions in different cities in the U.S. and in 12 European countries. Genevieve was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church, Raymore; Urich 4-H Baby Beef Club; Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority; American Legion Auxiliary; and Lions Club. In 1994, they moved from Harrisonville to Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melville Creighton, on Aug. 17, 2012.

She is survived by her first cousin, Betty Clay Lefman, Kansas City; her second cousins Donna Anne Harrison, Shafter, Calif., and Dorothy Lutton, Fresno, Calif.; and friends.

Graveside services were March 2 at Urich Cemetery, Urich.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Hendrick Cemetery Association.

Goldie M. Daughtery

Oct. 8, 1918 - Feb. 24, 2013

Goldie M. (McMillen) Daugherty, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee’s Summit. She was the daughter of Harvey and Minnie McMillen.

Services for Daugherty were March 2 at Wallace Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Conway of Hickory Grove Baptist officiating. Burial was in Mineral Creek Cemetery near Leeton.

Gladys Genevieve Miller

May 14, 1927 - Feb. 24, 2013

Gladys Genevieve (Webster) Miller, 85, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at St. Luke’s East Medical Center, Lee’s Summit. She was the daughter of Arthur and Susan (Smith) Webster.

Gladys is survived by one son, one granddaughter and one grandson, all of Lee’s Summit, and five great-grandchildren.

There will be a private family service.

Gary Ellis Sechrest, 77, of Blue Springs, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Shangri-La Rehab and Care Center, Blue Springs.

Funeral services were March 6 at the funeral home. Reverend John Clark and Eddie Sechrest officiated. Interment was in Strasburg Cemetery.

Betty Jane Shannon

Betty Jane Shannon, 88, of Harrisonville, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Golden Years Care Center in Harrisonville.

Betty was born Oct. 7, 1924, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Paul Baker and Irma Jewel (Greene) Waddell. She was a 1942 graduate of Wyandotte High School. Betty was a member of Foxy Ladies Red Hats in Harrisonville.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, one daughter, Catherine Mack, one brother, Robert Waddell and one son, David Shannon. She is survived by two sons, Phillip T. Shannon and wife, Karen, Overland Park, Kan., and Paul T. Shannon, Goodyear, Ariz.; two daughters, Deborah Shannon, Harrisonville, and Suzy Ward, Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Stacy Johnson (David), Michael Shannon (DeeDee), Sean Shannon (Cathy), Paul Hindley (Courtney), Jeremy Cook, Jeffrey Goldman (Julie) and six great-grandchildren, Micayla, Dakota, Bryce, Taylor, Hailey and Esther.

Funeral services were March 4 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Koman for the Cure.

Martha Jane Cook, 94, of Adrian, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian.

Martha Jane was born the daughter of James and Jessie Aldridge in Fairmount.

Rex Ro Garland, Jr.

Sept. 29, 1922 - March 1, 2013

Rex Ro Garland, Jr., 90, of Harrisonville, formerly of Archie, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Crown Care Center in Harrisonville.

Rex was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Archie, the son of Rex Ro and Lillian Launa (Lacey) Garland. He was a 1941 graduate of Archie High School and had lived in Archie and Harrisonville for most of his life. Rex was a WWII Navy veteran. He married Dicea Dean Minnick on July 1, 1949, at First Baptist Church in Archie. He worked for General Motors, Leeds Plant, in Kansas City as a metal finisher for 30 years before retiring in 1979. He was a member of the UAW Local 93. Rex was a member of First Baptist Church in Archie.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dicea Dean on April 13, 2007, and one brother, Robert Garland. He is survived by one son, Jim Garland and his wife, Diana, Springfield; two daughters, Jackie Taylor and her husband, Charles, Pleasant Hill, and Jean Garland, Grandview; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were March 5 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or American Heart Association.

Lisa Annette Hines Salmon, 43, of Creighton, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at her home in Creighton

Bernice Irene Shier

Jan. 18, 1923 - March 1, 2013

Bernice Irene Shier was born Jan. 18, 1923, near the Village of Chapel Hill in Northwestern Johnson County. She died Friday, March 1, 2013, at The Garden Valley Manor in Kansas City.

She was the youngest of five children and the only girl born to Harry Charles Shier and Annie Sara Davidson Shier. She graduated from Central High School in Kansas City and Sarachon Harley School of Secretarial Training. She worked as a secretary for 25 years, the last 17 years of which were with the Missouri Public Service Company in Raytown.

She was united in marriage to Vernon D. Smith, of Warrensburg, on Oct. 11, 1946. He preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 2000.

Bernice left office work in June 1964 to become a full-time mother to Baby Gina and in December 1965, Baby Joni joined the family. She was especially proud of her family and her two girls, whom brought great joy to their parents. Bea, as she was familiarly known, loved bowling and participated in bowling leagues in the Kansas City area for many years, having been a member of two Women’s City Championship teams.

Her later years were devoted to caring for a brother and sister-in-law and being attentive to her husband who needed daily assistance. She was a member of Park Hill Christian Church.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Gina Cox (Michael) of Platte Woods, and Joni Huntington (Chris) of Kansas City, two granddaughters, Amanda and Claire Cox of Platte Woods, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Warrensburg. The family will receive friends 4-7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association or Parkinson’s Foundation.

Susan Virginia Hackett

April 13, 1955 - March 2, 2013

Susan Virginia Hackett, 57, of Lee’s Summit, formerly of Strasburg, was born Wednesday, April 13, 1955, in Harrisonville, the daughter of Granville Claude and Rachel Armelda (Johnston) Hackett. She died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Lee’s Summit Hospital surrounded with love and family, after a courageous and hard fought 2 1⁄2 year battle with colon cancer.

Susan was a proud graduate of Strasburg C-3 and Pleasant Hill High School Class of 1972.

She was an executive retail manager for Dick’s Sporting Goods. She was a member of Strasburg Union Church and attended Faith United Methodist Church, Grain Valley.

Susan had an indomitable and competitive spirit that guided her through her life and career. She worked hard and achieved much in her short time here on earth.

She loved her family and was especially fond of all her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She loved and cherished all of them as her own.

Susan was preceded in death by her mother Rachel on July 9, 2006.

She is survived by her father Granville of Strasburg; seven siblings Douglas (and Margie) Hackett of Parkville, Mary Jo Hackett of Harrisonville, David (and Patty) Hackett of Lone Jack, Gene (and Judy) Hackett of Fairmont, Minn., Bill (and Vicki) Hackett of Carrollton, Texas; Wesley (and Kay) Hackett of Lee’s Summit, Christopher (and Jane) Hackett of Rio Rancho, N.M.; 13 nieces and nephews, 26 great nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Dr. John Davis and staff at Kansas City Cancer Center and Dick’s Sporting Goods for their overwhelming care and support.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 6 at Faith United Methodist Church, Grain Valley. Susan’s brother Reverend David Hackett officiated. Interment was in Strasburg Cemetery. Casket bearers were Shane Hackett, Brandi Schemerhorn, Mike Hackett, Laura Wille, Colleen Recker, Jim Hackett, Brian Hackett, Philip Hackett, Angela Roach, Matthew Hackett, Aaron Hackett, Amanda Hackett-Hann, and Christopher Hackett.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. March 5 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Faith United Methodist Church, which will be then divided between two mission orphanages in India and Haiti that she supported.

Catherine Lucille Harper

Catherine Lucille Harper, 90, of Harrisonville, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at her home.

Catherine was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Harrisonville, the daughter of Horace Monroe and Savannah (Cox) Bearce. She was a lifelong Harrisonville resident. During the war, she worked at Fairfax aircraft plant.

Catherine married William “Bill” Harper on Sept. 17, 1945, in Lenexa, Kan. She was a minister at Peoples Community Church in Harrisonville. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary in Harrisonville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill on July 11, 1999, and her 10 brothers and sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Young and her husband, Sam, Harrisonville; three grandchildren, Adam Young, Rachel Stricklan and Alex Young and three great-grandchildren, Audra Young, Anthony Young and Angelina Young.

Funeral services were March 4 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Oakland Cemetery.
