Hunter earns All-American status for wrestling

March 29, 2013

Joe Hunter, a freshman at Benedictine College, competed in the NAIA National Wrestling Championships March 1-2 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Hunter placed eighth in the 149-pound weight class bracket.

Hunter, a Harrisonville High School graduate, went 3-3 in the tournament, which earned him All-American status. His season record was 22-15.

Hunter also received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy for the class of 2017.

He will report to Annapolis, Maryland in June, where he will join his older brother Ben, who is currently in his third year at the academy.

As part of the application process, Hunter was required to get a nomination from either his local representative or state senator. Fourth District Rep. Vicky Hartzler gave Hunter his necessary appointment.

Hunter is the son of Richard and Julie Hunter, Harrisonville, and the grandson of Norbert and Joan Schmitz, Parnell.
