Jerry Burchett, 52
Past or present community service/public office: Served on the Midway School Board for three years; served on the Freeman Cemetery Board for 15 years.
Why do you wish to serve your school district on the Board of Education?: I would like to finish the job we have started on the current board. I feel like our district had lost its way with the current administration and board. We have turned a corner and are getting things turned the right way.
How do you feel about Gov. Nixon’s stance on the state’s education budget and his proposal to extend the school year?: Money is always the problem. We need more support financially. Studies have proven that preschool learning is very important to be successful in school, yet in the last few years the program, “Parents as Teachers” budget has been slashed by more than 50 percent.
What would be your top priorities for the community you would serve, if elected?: The only priority a school board member should have is to do what is best for the students in the district.
Debbie Smith, 44
Occupation: Compliance specialist
Past or present community service/public office: Midway School Board; Boy Scouts.
Why do you wish to serve your school district on the Board of Education?: To aid our school to providing the very best education for our children.
How do you feel about Gov. Nixon’s stance on the state’s education budget and his proposal to extend the school year?: An extended school year would be a benefit to educating our future leaders and productive members of our society. However, this is not possible if we continue to cut funding to our schools. Educating our children should be our top priority, as they are the ones to lead our country. We need to provide the best foundation we can.
What would be your top priorities for the community you would serve, if elected?: Having the best staff possible to educate our children and provide a solid foundation for them to use in the future.
