Archie hung on to take down Liberal 3-1 in the Class 2, District 14 semifinal game May 13 at Archie.

“We had a lot less mental errors in the games previous and a good job batting,” Archie senior Jimmy Blundell said.

The No. 2 seeded Whirlwinds started out the bottom of the first inning with two runs. After a walk from sophomore Kody Bray, sophomore Collin Lewis hit a double to send Bray home. Lewis was tagged out at second though, giving Archie two outs.

Junior Calvin Romi hit a single next, but collided with the Liberal first baseman at the base, getting injured and had to be carried off the field. Junior Collin Morgan was put in as a pinch-runner and junior Boston Dickerson hit a single to send Morgan home to give Archie a 2-0 advantage.

“It will hurt us with Calvin going out, but we will have to battle back,” Dickerson said.

The Bulldogs cut the lead in the top of the fourth inning off a triple. Dickerson tried to pick off the runner at third base but overthrew the ball, allowing Liberal to score and make the game 2-1. But Dickerson rebounded with two strikeouts to end the inning.

Archie scored again in the bottom of the fifth after Bray was hit by a pitch and sophomore Toby Gibson hit a single. Lewis singled, getting Gibson forced out at second. Freshman Kody Kisner was forced out at first, but not before Bray made it across home plate for a score.

Dickerson struck out three more batters in the next two innings to help keep Archie’s lead.

“It was better,” Dickerson said. “A lot of guys around me stepped up. We got a quality win. You can’t do it by yourself. We got three runs on the board.”

The Whirlwinds blew past College Heights Christian 14-5 in the championship game May 14.

Archie had a slim 5-4 lead going into the fourth inning, but scored six runs to break open the game.

Dickerson led the Whirlwinds with three hits, a triple, a home run, four RBIs and three runs. Blundell threw for two innings, allowing six hits, four runs, all earned, one walk and had five strikeouts. Lewis picked up the win for Archie, pitching for four innings, allowing three hits, one run, earned, one walk and struck out two batters.

The Whirlwinds, 8-9, will play the Class 2, District 13 champion (Skyline vs. Cole Camp) in the Class 2 sectional game Monday, May 20.
