It was a fight to the finish, but in the end, Archie hung on for a 4-3 win over Cole Camp in the Class 2 sectional baseball game May 21 at Cole Camp.
The Whirlwinds had a 2-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
“We loaded up the bases the first two innings and managed only two runs to show for it,” Archie head coach Paul Brack said. “We had some great sacrifice bunts to get runners in scoring position and scored two runs in the second.”
In the fifth inning, Cole Camp took over the lead with three runs. But in the bottom of the inning, Archie tied things up. And in the sixth inning, the Whirlwinds got a base-runner on, sacrificed him to second and to third base and then Kody Bray drove in the winning run with a single up the middle.
After three quick outs in the top of the seventh, Archie sealed the victory.
“Boston Dickerson pitched a fantastic game scattering four hits and giving up three unearned runs in the fifth,” Brack said. “He bore down when needed and proceeded to shut them down the last two innings.”
Dickerson threw all seven innings for the win, with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Bray had two hits and one RBI. Jacob Gordon had two hits. Skyler Black had one hit, two walks and one RBI. Dickerson and Collin Morgan had one run each. Ty Humbird had two runs and one walk and Toby Gibson had one walk.
Archie, 9-9, took on the winner of the Sacred Heart vs. West Platte sectional game in Class 2 quarterfinals May 23. The results will be in next week’s issue.
