Cass Regional Medical Center will host a free health screening at 9-11 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the Community Bank of Harrisonville, 1503 N. State Rt. 291 Highway. Take advantage of free blood pressure, blood oxygen and blood sugar screenings, and obtain a free total lipid profile, which measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. For the most accurate results, screening participants are asked to fast for at least 12 hours prior to the screening and take medications as ususal (with water only). Relay for Life
Raymore’s third annual Relay for Life Golf Tournament will be Monday, June 3 at the Creekmoor Golf Club. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Organizers are still in need of several golf teams. There will be cash and/or awards for first and second place teams in both A and B flights. Prizes are provided for the Men’s and Women’s longest drive and the Men’s and Women’s closest to the pin and the putting contests. Lunch is provided. Raffle items/door prizes will be given at the conclusion of the tournament. Do you want to improve balance, flexibility, strength, and energy? The University of Missouri Extension is offering Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, a 10 week program, for persons 60 years or older.
All exercises are done either standing or sitting; there are no floor exercises involved. All weight equipment for the class will be provided.
The class will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, starting June 3 and will meet at the MU Extension Center at 201 West Wall in Harrisonville. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, May 29 and the class is limited to 15 people. The fee is $35 (second person from same household is $15). Metropolitan Community College will be offering introductory computer classes at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, and at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Harrisonville Library. Instruction will focus on a different topic each session and questions on any computer topic will be answered as time permits.
Open mic night
The Downtown Peculiar Arts & Culture District will be hosting an open mic event during the Clara Brierly Wine, Art, and Music Festival 4-6 p.m. Saturday, June 8, located at 163 W. Center Street, Peculiar. No sign up is necessary. Sound system and sound monitor provided.
The Missouri Rawhide Mounted Shooters second Annual Cowboy Mounted Shooting Competition will be held at noon Sunday, June 9 at North Park Arena in Harrisonville. Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the nation’s fastest growing equestrian sports. Mounted contestants compete using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. Food preservation workshop
The University of Missouri Extension is offering a five-workshop series on food preservation methods in Harrisonville beginning Monday, June 10. The series includes sessions on canning green beans (use of pressure canner), salsas (use of water bath canning), pickling, and jams and jellies and dehydration. All workshops include hands-on learning with each participant taking home their preserved product. You have the option to attend an afternoon or evening session. Cost is $20 per person per workshop or $85 for the entire series (A second family member can attend for half price). Paid registration is required three working days prior to the specific workshop. The Raymore Historical Society meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the museum located in lower level of the Cullen Funeral Home at 612 W. Foxwood Drive, Raymore. The June 14 meeting will feature Nancy Cramer with her “Cemeteries and Memorials of WWI in Europe.” The museum is ADA accessible. All are welcome.
The Baby and Junior Contests will be at 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively, Saturday, June 15 at Belton Christian Church. The Miss Belton Contest is 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Markey Park. Applications are available on the Belton Community Project website and due Saturday, June 8.
