We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who supported Evan throughout his spelling bee journey. First, a big thank you to the Cass County Democrat-Missourian for sponsoring our county spelling bee winner’s participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee….it was an amazing opportunity for Evan. Also, we’d like to express our appreciation to the Raymore-Peculiar School District which hosts the county bee and then makes all the arrangements for the winner to travel to the National Bee. A special shout-out to Debbie Powers and Karmin Ricker for all their support and help.
Next, we’d like to publicly thank the McEowen Elementary School staff and students. They went above and beyond to make Evan feel very special. When he won the county bee, they posted a congratulatory message on the school marquee and displayed his trophy in the main hallway. On the final day of classes, they arranged for a special presentation by Mayor Woods during the all-school assembly. Evan was also presented a shirt that was signed by the McEowen family. Finally, classes made good luck signs which were hung all over the school. The teachers, staff, and students were so supportive and we can’t say thank you enough. We’d like to especially express our appreciation to Mrs. Brown, Evan’s teacher, and Mr. Erholtz, the principal.
Finally, we want to say thank you to all the family, friends, community members, and others who sent words of encouragement via Facebook, email, Twitter, texting, phone calls, and cards. During the bee, we could feel everyone pulling for Evan even though we were miles away. We were overwhelmed by everyone’s excitement and backing. It was so much fun to hear about “watch parties” and the setting of DVRs and to read the posts on social media as he progressed through Rounds 2 and 3 on Wednesday.
It was an amazing journey and opportunity. We all gained so much from the experience and we just wanted to say “thank you” for everything!

Several years ago I wrote a letter to the editor, complaining that I felt the city was supportive of every sport except skateboarding and instead had singled skateboarders out to harrass.
I should have written sooner, but I'm very thankful to the city for putting in a skateboard park.
This has been a great addition to our city park, and it gives skateboarders a place to practice and improve their skills.
Thank you for listening and being considerate of all sports. I'm very grateful.
