Joplin woman killed in overnight crash

An 18-year-old Joplin woman was killed in crash late June 25 near Peculiar.

The wreck occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 49, one mile south of Route J at 10:25 p.m.

Sejal B. Patel was pronounced dead by the Jackson County Medical Examiner after the 2010 Toyota Sienna minivan she was riding in was hit by the driver of a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee trying to pass the vehicle she was in.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Jeep clipped the back end of the Toyota, causing both vehicles to travel off of the right side of the highway.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as Steven D. Horack, 49, of Overland Park, Kan., suffered serious injuries.

Horack, along with the five passengers in the minivan who were hurt, were transported to area hospitals.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Peculiar Police assisted the Highway Patrol. The crash remains under investigation
