July 5, 2013

Three local students have been selected as state finalists in the National American Miss Missouri Pageant.

Alexa Slover, a soon to be senior at Harrisonville High School, was selected, along with Abbygail Lea Mathewson, 5, of Belton, and Leilani Isabelle Jones, 8, of Belton.

Slover, the daughter of Paul and Lisa Slover, Harrisonville, will be competing in the Teen category, Mathewson, the daughter of Robert Mathewson, will be competing in the Princess category, and Jones, the daughter of Ruth Reid, will be competing in the Junior Pre-Teen category.

In her spare time, Mathewson participates in fundraisers and dances. She also enjoys traveling, cooking with her mother and drawing. Jones organizes fundraisers as well as exploring nature, dancing and choreography. She also likes to travel, cook with her mother, read, paint and sing.

The pageant will be held Aug. 9-10 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center, Columbia. The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses and air transportation to compete in the nationals in California.

The National American Miss Pageants each year awards $1.5 million nationally in cash, scholarships and other prizes, which includes a new Ford Mustang convertible.

All activities and competitions are kept age appropriate. Girls under the age of 12 are not allowed to wear make-up and there is no swimsuit competition. The pageant program is based on inner-beauty, as well as poise and presentation. Emphasis is put on the importance of developing self-confidence, learning good sportsmanship as well as setting and achieving personal goals.
