I am offering this opinion in reference to the Aug. 1, letter from the treasurer of the Cass County Chapter of the Missouri Democratic Party, Sharon Marshall, sensationalizing Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler’s July 22-26 newsletter comments regarding President Barack Obama's recent visit to Warrensburg.
And, while I might suspect an ulterior motive to Marshall’s apparent partisan comments, I would like to add my own challenge to Hartzler, namely, for her to defend why she has not actively promoted the initiation of Articles of Impeachment against President Obama for – in addition to other actions that might be construed as “high crimes and misdemeanors” – what I believe to be the murder/reckless endangerment in Yemen of Anwar al-Awlaki and three other US citizens who President Obama authorized to be attacked using deadly force without first pursuing “due process” under the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution.
Regardless of the emotional issues attached to the attacks and the political issues attached to the impeachment process, this action cries out for formal legal review. It seems to me that we need to stop giving political cover and abandon our partisan political positions because, left unchallenged, the potential precedence of this action places each one of us in jeopardy of the capricious nature of the Executive branch of government and its own unilateral interpretation of current law under the Constitution.
While I am not an attorney, it also seems to me that we are in a constitutional crisis where political intimidation and discord prevails and that failure of members of Congress to pursue impeachment is tantamount to being accessories after the fact or, at a minimum, dereliction of duty involving their oath to support and defend the Constitution.
There are those of us that believe that the current administration and Democratic Party are incompetent to lead the US and that the Republican Party has little more to offer. It is time – for the benefit of the nation – that we move past our politics and emphasize the “Grand Plan” and the innate strength of the Republic that is our Constitution. What say ye, Congresswoman Hartzler?
