For their first game of the season, Pleasant Hill was very composed in their solid 25-10 and 25-20 victory over Summit Christian Academy Sept. 4 at Pleasant Hill.

“We started out really strong and let up at the end,” Pleasant Hill senior setter Brooke Crotty said. “But it was a good game.”

In the first set, Pleasant Hill got a quick 13-3 advantage before making a couple of forced errors, followed by a Summit Christian Academy kill from sophomore outside hitter Mady Harmon.

Later in the game, with the Chicks ahead at 21-9, the Eagles had three kills hit the net or go out of bounds to give Pleasant Hill points. Summit Christian Academy sophomore right-side hitter Keeli Shearer earned a point with a kill to make the score 24-10, but a push by Pleasant Hill’s Crotty ended the game.

“In the first one, I feel like we started strong and stayed all the way through,” Crotty said. “In the second one, we started off not as strong.”

The second match was much closer as the Eagles began the game with a 2-0 lead. Summit Christian Academy kept the lead until Pleasant Hill tied the score up at 7-7.

The Eagles gained another lead though with a kill from sophomore middle blocker Elizabeth Stratton and another from Shearer.

But the Chicks fought back to tie up the score at 9-9 with a block from junior middle hitter Rachel Schick and again at 11-11 with a push from senior outside hitter Codi Winslow and a kill from junior middle hitter Kai Wesemann before taking over an advantage.

Pleasant Hill led 21-15 when Summit Christian Academy’s Harmon and junior setter Savvy Hughes both had kills to make the score 25-17. After a kill from freshman outside hitter Abb Welther, Pleasant Hill had two errors to tighten the gap to 22-19.

Harmon’s next volley went out of bounds, but the Chicks followed with an error to make the score 23-20. Pleasant Hill finished the game with a kill each from Wesemann and Winslow.

“We gave them a few points in the end,” Winslow said. “But we finished strong. I thought we did really well.”

Winslow led with seven kills and two digs. Welther had four kills and Wesemann had three kills, one block and one dig. Schick had two kills and four blocks and Kassidy Albright had two kills and two digs. Crotty had 10 assists, one dig and two aces. Paige Johnson had one kill and one dig and Haley Cash had one kill and three digs. Mallory Humphrey had three assists and one kill, Bailey Heublein had six assists, one dig and one ace and Hannah Dustman had two assists.
