The Cass County Democrat Missourian has earned eight awards from the annual Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were presented Sept. 7 at the Missouri Press Association’s convention at the Marriott Downtown in Kansas City.
"Our talented news team is very deserving of these awards," Publisher/editor John Beaudoin said. "I am proud that we can showcase our depth and range as a newspaper with this variety of honors. We go up against some of the best weekly newspapers in the state in our category."
In the Weeklies, class two category, the Democrat Missourian earned honors for Best Front Page and Best Front-To-Back Newspaper Design.
Reporter/Photographer Bethany Bashioum earned a first place award for Best Coverage of Government for her coverage of nepotism allegations among Cass County politicians.
Bashioum also earned third place honors for Best Breaking News Photo and Best Feature Photo for her piece, “Students mourn teens death,” published on Nov. 30, 2012.
Sports Editor Stephanie Yeagle picked up three awards in the contest.
Yeagle earned third place for Best Sports Photo for “Game by game,” a photo published Nov. 2, 2012 of the Pleasant Hill Chicks volleyball team celebrating a district title victory.
She also earned two honorable mention awards for Best Sports News or Package for her coverage of Drexel earning a second place in the Class 1 MSHSAA basketball state championship, “Showing what they can do,” published March 23, 2012, and for Best Sports Pages for the newspaper’s sister paper, the Lee’s Summit Journal.
Judging for the contest was based on entries from 2012.
