Raymore-Peculiar ended with two strong games to defeat rivals Belton in the match held Sept. 16 at Raymore-Peculiar.
The Panthers took down the Pirates 25-13 and 25-18.
“I think we played pretty well for the most part,” Raymore-Peculiar sophomore outside hitter Meghan Maher said. “We worked as a team.”
The first game went by easily for Raymore-Peculiar, but the second started out with Belton at the advantage.
“I think we got a little bit lackadaisical,” junior middle hitter Joslyn Ortiz said.
The Pirates started things off with a 7-2 lead, helped by two kills from Morgan Taylor.
Raymore-Peculiar picked things back up with a tip from senior outside hitter Abby Goulding. After two Belton errors, the score was tightened to 7-6. The Panthers made an error, but Maher followed with a kill, plus an ace by senior setter Paige Dosch to tie the game at 8-8.
“Once they went on a run, we knew we just had to calm down,” Maher said.
The Panthers built a lead from there, until they led 19-13. But the Pirates weren’t ready to give up as Taylor and Bailee Daniels both picked up a kill. Raymore-Peculiar made two more errors to close the gap to 19-17.
After a tip from Ortiz, Belton responded with a kill by Daniels. But the Pirates made two errors in a row to make the score 22-18. Maher made a kill, followed by an error on the Belton side, plus another kill from Maher to end the game.
“We did really well,” Ortiz said. “We all worked together and we communicated. We really brought it together as a team tonight.”
