Archie fell to 0-4 on the season at the hands of Greenfield Sept. 20 at Archie.
It was the Whirlwinds’ homecoming, but the Wildcats walked away with a 35-20 victory in the non-conference clash. Even though the Whirlwinds had a 20-7 lead at halftime, the Wildcats mustered enough momentum to dominate the second half 28-0.
Calvin Romi scored first for Archie on a hand-off play from the 1-yard line with 6:09 minutes left in the first quarter. And with the 2-point conversion attempt foiled by the Wildcats the score was 6-0. Next, with 1:42 minutes remaining in the first quarter Romi caught a pass for a 57-yard advance into the end zone that was followed up with a successful 2-point conversion run by Dakota Jones.
The Wildcats answered with 11:53 minutes left in the second quarter when Gage Stephens ran in from the 5-yard line. With the extra point attempt good, Archie remained up 14-7. And then, with 1:26 remaining in the half, Jones hit Kale Wheeler for a 68-yard touchdown pass.
The second half began with the Whirlwinds in possession of the ball, but an interception by the Wildcats led to a touchdown by Stephens with 6:54 remaining. With the score now 20-14, Greenfield interceptions and sacks would set the overall tone for this game with six total Whirlwind turnovers and six sacks. On a roll, the Wildcats scored again with 2:43 remaining when Jake Tullock reached the end zone and again the extra point was good making it 21-20.
Unable to retaliate, Archie would see the Wildcats penetrate the end zone early into the fourth quarter with 10:19 on the clock. Making it 28-20 after Lane Hankins crossed the goal line. Greenfield’s Anthony Schwindler ended the night’s scoring frenzy with a touchdown with 2:15 remaining in the game.
Archie quarterback Jones completed six of 19 pass attempts totaling 258 yards. Wheeler led the Whirlwinds in tackles with nine total followed by Romi with eight. Austin Ward and Nathan Setzer each had seven tackles.
The Whirlwinds travel to Western Missouri Conference rivals Adrian at 7 p.m. tonight.
