Kathryn Poling

Oct. 28, 1927 - Sept. 29, 2013

Kathryn Poling, 85, of Harrisonville, was born Oct. 28, 1927, near Latour, the daughter of George Alonzo and Maudie Jewel (Tremain) Voyles. She died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville.

On June 1, 1947, Kathryn was united in marriage to Claude Harold Poling in Harrisonville.

Kathryn was employed as a retail clerk for Buy Rite Grocery Store and later for Scavuzzo’s Grocery Store, Harrisonville, until her retirement in 1987. After retirement, she obtained her real-estate license in 1985 and went to work for Century 21 in Harrisonville. Kathryn was a member of First Christian Church, California, Mo. She enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, bowling and was part of several local bowling leagues. Kathryn had moved to Harrisonville in 1963.

Besides her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death her husband, Claude, on July 6, 1982, and her sister, June Cowan.

Kathryn is survived by two daughters, Sharon Davis and husband, Bob, Killeen, Texas, Claudia Davis and husband, Rick, Lee’s Summit; four granddaughters, Centa, Brittania, Michelle and Amanda; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Kathleen Hedden, Harrisonville; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were Oct. 3 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with burial in Holden Cemetery, Holden.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Mary Isabelle Gregg

July 20, 1922 - Sept. 30, 2013

Mary Isabelle Gregg, 91, of Creighton, was born in Garden City, the daughter of Charles and Mary Sexson. She died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Benchmark Healthcare of Harrisonville.

Funeral services were Oct. 4 at Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, with burial in Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Wayne Richard Gunnufson

Dec. 8, 1941 - Sept. 30, 2013

Wayne Richard Gunnufson, 71, of Garden City, was the son of Calman and Lucille (Adler) Gunnufson. He died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at his home near Garden City.

George L. Loughead

May 6, 1939 - Sept. 30, 2013

George L. Loughead, 74, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

He was the son of John Rinaldo and Ollie Rowena (Johnson) Loughead. On Sept. 24, 1976, he was married to Sheila Lee Riddle.

Cremation has been accorded and no services are scheduled.

Marilyn Capehart

Oct. 21, 1932 - Oct. 1, 2013

Marilyn Capehart, 80, formerly of LaCygne, Kan., was born to Walter and Elizabeth Rose of LaCygne, Kan. Funeral services were Oct. 5 at Bromwell Lounge at Foxwood Springs, Raymore, under the direction of Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Burial was in Star Valley Cemetery, LaCygne, Kan.

Mary Katheryne Surber

March 5, 1919 - Oct. 1, 2013

Mary Katheryne Surber, 94, of Garden City, was born March 5, 1919, near Garden City, the daughter of Dean Roysten and Lorah Mae (Allen) Surber. She died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at Golden Years Care Center, Harrisonville.

Mary attended all 12 years at Garden City School, graduating from Garden City High School in 1937. She was active in softball, baseball and basketball.

Mary was baptized in 1931 at Garden City Christian Church by Rev. Banks and was a lifelong member there.

Mary was employed at the Lee Goode Hatchery in Garden City from 1937 to 1945. She then went to work at Commerce Trust in Kansas City until 1949. She began working for Foster Lumber Company in 1951 in Kansas City, moving to Boulder, Colo., when the corporate office relocated there in 1968. She retired in 1986, after 35 years with the company, now known as Diamond Lumber, and remained in Boulder for another 10 years before returning to the Garden City family farm in 1995.

Mary was a Junior Member of the Index Auxiliary; active in the Boulder Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and had many friends there; she was an active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Boulder, Colo.; and her hobbies included bowling, dancing, playing bridge and pitch, and attending Colorado University men’s basketball games where she supported CU unless Mizzou was the opponent.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Elizabeth Surber, her brother, Robert Dean Surber, and her sister-in-law, Shirley Lucille (Gwinner) Surber.

She is survived by her nephews, Robert Jr. (Debbie) Surber, of Harrisonville, Richard “Dick” Surber of Pleasant Hill, Ron (Denise) Surber of Harrisonville, Rod (Gayla) Surber of Lone Jack, and her niece, Rev. Candice K. (Bill) Brown of Des Moines, Iowa; great nephews and great nieces as well as great-great nephews and great-great nieces and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Oct. 5 at Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial was in Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Gerald Dean “Jerry” Johnson

Jerry Johnson, 64, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013. Visitation was at 2 p.m. followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd. Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery.

Jerry was born Feb. 19, 1949, in Kansas City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a cabinetmaker. Jerry leaves his wife Jean; daughter, April Hodges and her husband, Jeff; son, Brandon Johnson and his wife, Natalie; brothers, Kenny Johnson, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Julia; sisters, Roberta McMillian and her husband, Paul, Linda Minshall, Sharon Mitchell; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Brayden and Kylie.

Nolie V. Burton

Feb. 14, 1931 - Oct. 5, 2013

Nolie V. Burton, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. followed by memorial services at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1111 Foxwood Dr., Raymore.

Nolie was born Feb. 14, 1931, in Little Rock, Ark., to Harvey and Civil Tippitt. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was a member of the church. She retired from Avon.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, Billy F. Burton; sister, Betty York; brothers, O.C. Tippitt and William Tippitt.

She leaves her children David K. Burton and Deborah K. (Gary) Peterson; three granddaughters, Nolie Peterson, Brianne (Matt) Warburton, and Kaylee Peterson; five great-grandchildren and countless friends.

Alice Marie Kimrey

Sept. 12, 1918 - Oct. 6, 2013

Alice Marie Kimrey, 95, of Pleasant Hill, formerly of Kansas City and Hermitage, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Stark Cemetery, Plato.

Velma Nadine Beckerdite

Velma Nadine Beckerdite, 87, lifelong resident of Harrisonville, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at her home. Funeral services were Oct. 10 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.

Velma was born Dec. 21, 1925, on a farm outside of Harrisonville, the daughter of Trucil and Minnie (Kohntopp) Hammontree. Her mother died in 1929. Trucil remarried in 1930 to Mildred (Holloway) Hedricks. Velma married Robert Beckerdite one year after high school. During WWII, she worked as an inspector for Pratt & Whitney. She worked for Kansas City Public Library until Robert returned from the war. She and Robert farmed for a few years until they started a building business, where Velma designed many of the floor plans. She worked there until her divorce in 1973. Velma then worked as an inspector for Calmar in Lee’s Summit for 20 years until her retirement in 1993.

She traveled extensively throughout her life, including a trip to China, Japan and Hawaii in 1982 and another trip to Russia. She loved family, friends, books, music and genealogy. She recently planned and attended her 70th high-school class reunion.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Eugene Hammontree and stepbrothers, Bill and Bob Hedricks. She is survived by four children, Anne Gentry, Harrisonville, Charles Beckerdite and his wife, Joan, Versailles, Melinda Hipple, Baldwin City, Kan., and James Beckerdite and his wife, Cheryl, Harrisonville; one brother, Harold Hammontree; five grandchildren, Megan (Gentry) Rallis, Clint, Eric and Cameron Beckerdite and Aaron Hipple and one great-grandson, Maddox Rallis.

Janette Jean Johnston

July 26, 1928 - Oct. 7, 2013

Janette Jean Johnston, 85, of Peculiar, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Belton Regional Medical Center in Belton, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Burial will be in Wills Cemetery in Peculiar. Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10 at the funeral home. Contributions to American Cancer Association.

Janette was born July 26, 1928, in St. Aubert, the daughter of Everett Allen and Betty E. (Harrison) Quick. She was a long-time resident, 38 years, of Belton. Janette married Wayne Nelson Johnston on Friday, April 13, 1946 in Jefferson City. Janette had worked for the Visiting Nurse Association and Nursing Care, Inc. She loved to garden, crochet, read, cook and play cards and other games. She enjoyed growing flowers and working in her garden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Wayne Johnston, Jr., and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Wayne Johnston, of the home; children, Linda Kihn, Belton, Alverda McReynolds, Grove, Okla., Richard Johnston, Cleveland, Diana Boos, Peculiar; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
