Caring Whirlwinds donate funds to several causes

November 29, 2013

Led by the sixth grade service learning group called the Caring Whirlwinds, Archie Elementary students have been striving to make a positive difference in a multitude of ways. One recent successful event promoted by the CWs was a collection of funds to assist Gannon Hathcock, a 15- year-old Drexel boy battling Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Students and staff members district-wide contributed a total of $835 to help Gannon and his family.

The CWs also assisted in organizing activities for the elementary school’s Red Ribbon Week, a week-long national drug awareness campaign. In addition, these students will be collecting throughout the year pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Best Choice Labels for the HELP Humane Society in Belton.

To honor veterans, the students created a hallway display recognizing local veterans and promoted a project called The Power of 11 Cents which will benefit the Missouri Military Family Relief Fund. The students set a goal of collecting $111.11 for this cause and exceeded this.
