Candidates file for April school, city races

Filing for a variety of elected position around Cass County, including local school board, aldermen, city council, and mayoral offices, for the April 8, 2014 election, is in full swing.

Filing will be open through 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The following individuals have filed for candidacy as of Tuesday, Jan. 7:

City races

Archie has two city aldermen seats available for two-year terms. The seats include an East Ward position, currently held by Mark Houchen, and a West Ward position, currently held by Matt Janssen. Houchen has filed.

Cleveland is looking to elect a new mayor, a position currently held by Patricia Masterson, along with filling three alderman seats. Offices held by North Ward Alderman Barbara Hemenway, South Ward Alderman Jeff Denton, and Third Ward Alderman Dea Ann Ackermann are up for election. Each office holds a two-year term. No one has filed.

Creighton has three public offices up for election. Residents will elect a new mayor to replace Kathy Salmon who resigned in November, and two aldermen seats will also be on the ballot, seats currently filled by West Ward Alderman Bob Jacobs and East Ward Alderman Corrine Hon. Each office holds a two-year term. Debbie Swadley and David Gardner have filed for the mayor’s seat. Corinne Hon has filed for the East Ward Alderman seat.

Drexel has two, two-year, city alderman seats that will be on the ballot. Offices held by West Ward Alderman Bob Thomas and East Ward Alderman Mike Wheeler are up for election. No one has filed.

East Lynne has two aldermen seats available. Offices held by Alderman Heath Wiltshire and Thomas Shroyer are up for election for two year terms. No one has filed.

Freeman mayor’s seat is open for a two-year term, a post currently filled by Jim Deremer. Seats for an East Ward Alderman, currently filled by Tom Bray, and a West Ward alderman, currently filled by Brad Hess, are also up for election. Tom Bray has filed for mayor. Robert Drechsel has filed for East Ward Alderman and Brad Hess has filed for West Ward Alderman.

Garden City has several seats up for election, including the mayor’s office, currently filled by Dewey Henry, an East Ward Alderman, currently filled by Debbie Butcher, and an West Ward alderman, currently filled by Alvin Poisal. Each office is a two-year term. No one has filed.

Lake Winnebago will look to elect a new mayor, an office currently held by Richard Scharten, and two aldermen seats, currently held by Jerry Haefele and Robert Bryant. Each office is a two-year term. Scharten has filed for reelection. Bryant and Elizabeth Norwat have filed for the Alderman seats.

Peculiar’s mayor seat, currently occupied by Ernie Jungmeyer, is open, and along with three offices for city aldermen, will be on the ballot. Aldermen spots available include the positions currently held by Ward 1 Alderman Homer Dunsworth, Ward 2 Alderman Donald Turner and Ward 3 Alderman Michael Gallagher. Each office is a two-year term. Kimberly Mallison and Holly Stark has filed for the mayor seat. Dunsworth and Kelsie McCrae have filed for Ward 1; Donald Turner has filed for Ward 2; and Michael Gallagher has filed for Ward 3.

Pleasant Hill has several seats up for election, including the mayor’s office, currently filled by John Van Gorkom, and two aldermen seats, currently held by Councilman-At-Large Ed Lust and Precinct 22 Councilman Steve Long. Each office is a two-year term. Van Gorkom has filed for reelection. Mark Guffey and Nick Zvacek have filed for the Councilman-At-Large seat, and D.A. Kramer has filed for the Precinct 22 seat.

Raymore’s four wards will each be looking to elect a new city council member for a two-year term to fill terms expiring by seats held by Second Ward Councilman Derek Moorhead, First Ward Councilman Jeffrey Stevens, Third Ward Councilman Robert Piepho, and Fourth Ward Councilwoman Sonja Abdelgawad. Moorhead, Stevens and Abdelgawad have filed for reelection. Jay Holman has filed for the Third Ward Councilman seat.

Strasburg will be looking to elect a mayor to fill the remainder of a term left by Barbara Shrivers, who recently resigned from the post. The North Ward Alderman seat, currently being held by Bernie Yates, is also up for election. No one has filed.

School board races

Archie has three school board vacancies available. The terms are for three years. The seats are currently being filled by Ryan Grimes, April Clark and Tim McGinnis. Grimes, Clark and McGinnis have filed for reelection.

Belton has three school board seats open that carry three year terms. The seats are currently being filled by John West, Carol Shutt and Dr. Hal Berger. West, Shutt and Berger have filed for reelection.

Cass-Midway will be accepting declarations of candidacy for three school board vacancies. The terms are for three years. The seats are currently being filled by Brent Yahnig, Chris Goddard and Susan Casaert. Casaert has filed.

Drexel has three school board seats coming available. The seats are currently being filled by Ronnie Jacobs, Brenda Hadley and Brad Lancaster. Jacobs and Hadley have filed.

East Lynne has three school board seats open that carry three year terms. The seats are currently being filled by Austin Sexton, Corby Kudron and Jamie Young. Young and Mike Parris have filed.

Harrisonville has three school board positions open. The seats are currently being filled by Deb Welhoff, Ron Kroenke and David Kauffman. The terms are for three years. Welhoff, Susie Yoder, Doug Alexander and Jerald Dickey have filed.

Pleasant Hill has three school board seats open that carry three year terms. The seats are currently being filled by Ron Baker, Jamie Alaniz and David Adamczyk. Adamczyk and Ryan Vefcovi have filed.

Raymore-Peculiar has three school board seats open that carry three year terms. The seats are currently being filled by Kyle Gillespie, Ruth Johnson and Kim York. Johnson, York, Barbara Boucher, Melinda Houdyshell, and Tonya Long have filed.

Sherwood has three school board seats coming available. The seats are currently being filled by Tony Burnworth, George Wade and Joe Kelsay. Burnworth has filed.

Strasburg has three school board seats open that carry three year terms. The seats are currently being filled by John Cantrell, Don Kleyh and Rick Randolph. Cantrell and Kleyh have filed.
