Election policies

February 21, 2014

We are about to enter what many around the county call the "silly season." In other words, the elections are almost upon us.

As the newspaper with the most in-depth and comprehensive coverage every election season, we feel it is also our responsibility to be transparent with our readers and the candidates about policies, procedures and the dos and don’ts of election season.

We also want to let everyone know of some new guidelines we have put into place at the Cass County Democrat Missourian to better inform and educate everyone as we head toward April 8.

Effective now and through the spring election, we are going to encourage letters to the editor from our public regarding campaign-related issues and candidates. Letters should be 250 words or less and be submitted from the original author, having not run in any other publication.

The Democrat-Missourian will not accept "form" letters that support candidates or letters from political action groups that are not signed by a single author.

Letters to the editor for the April 8 election must be submitted to the newspaper, with full name, city of origin and daytime phone number by March 21. Any letter rebutting a claim or in response to a previously published piece may be submitted by March 28. All letters will be run by April 4, however, letters directed at specific candidates’ platforms or issues will not be run after March 21.

Political endorsements from union, professional or other groups that wish to share their backing can do so in the form of a paid advertisement.

The Cass County Democrat Missourian will profile candidates for numerous school board, council and board of aldermen races through questionnaires and feature stories throughout the election season and leading up to April 8.

The Democrat Missourian will not publish political "photo opportunities" or announcements of political fundraising parties or activities.

We trust you will find this coverage to be balanced and indicative of the newspaper of record in Cass County.
