Grover Cleveland Hook, Jr.

Aug. 25, 1937 - March 4, 2014

Grover Cleveland Hook, Jr., 76. of Freeman, was born Aug. 25, 1937, in Freeman, the son of Grover Cleveland and Mary Elmeda (Downs) Hook. He died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville.

On June 14, 1959, Grover was united in marriage to Florence Gayle Beck in Kansas City.

Grover was employed as a welder for Pittman Manufacturing in Grandview. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Harrisonville. Grover loved to hunt, fish, sports, and spending time with people and especially his family.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Hook, on June 7, 2009; a daughter, Jael Louise Hook; several brothers and sisters.

Grover is survived by his son, Dewayne Glenn Hook and wife Debra, Freeman; a daughter, Sherri A. Moore, Harrisonville; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Clarence Hook; three sisters, Dorothy Sexton, Rosemary Pulliam and Lois Swearingin; other relatives and many friends.


There was a Celebration of Life service March 8 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Harrisonville.

Christopher Lee “Chris” Thomas

Oct. 7, 1957 - March 11, 2014

Christopher Lee “Chris” Thomas, 56, of Garden City, was born in Kansas City to Robert Leroy and Edith Marie (French) Thomas. He died Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City.

There was a graveside service March 15 at Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Douglas Vance “Van” Murray

Nov. 11, 1970-March 12, 2014

Douglas Vance “Van” Murray, 43, of Pleasant Hill, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at his home.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran proudly serving in the Iraq Theatre of Operations during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

While serving in the Army he served with the Military Police; later he used that experience and was an officer with the Sedgwick county sheriff’s office.

Visitation was March 16 and funeral services were March 17 at the funeral home. Reverend D. Kent Deubner officiated.

Graveside military services and interment were March 17 in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville.

J.H. “Homer” Puckett

April 9, 1929-March 12, 2014

J.H. “Homer” Puckett, 84, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Crown Care Center in Harrisonville.

Puckett was born April 9, 1929, in Rison, Ark., and spent much of his younger life in Arkansas before moving to Missouri, where he met his wife of 47 years Mary L. Vaughan. Puckett spent the last years of his life in Harrisonville ‘til his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary L. Puckett, a daughter Nina R. Wilson, two sisters, Lucille Finn and Inez Greeson, one brother Dale Puckett, two brothers-in-law, Mickey Finn and James Vaughan, and one sister-in-law, Rachel Vaughan.

He is survived by sons Jewel L. Puckett, Homer E. Puckett and Aubrey J. Puckett; three daughters Elizabeth A. Brown, Martha R. Hascock, Clara Faye Puckett; and stepchildren James R. Kelly (Cheryl), Iva Hibbard, Sallie A. Kelly, and Jacqueline L. Kelly; and many grand-children, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.


There will be a Celebration of Life service at a later date. The family is requesting no flowers.

Sandra J. Dyke

March 13, 2014

Sandra J. Dyke, 70, of Deepwater, died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City.

Cremation with no services scheduled.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Samuel L. Dyke of the home.

Family suggests contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Heart Institute.

Judith Nanette Brewster

Aug. 27, 1957-March 15, 2014

Judith Nanette Brewster, 56, of Kansas City, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Vitas Hospice in Kansas City. Funeral services were March 19 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with burial in Orient Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Zoo or to L.L. Dog Rescue.

Judith was born Aug. 27, 1957, in Harrisonville to Joseph Earl and Peggy Lucille (Brewster) Potts. She was adopted and raised by her grandparents, Frank and Mable Brewster. Judith graduated from Harrisonville High School. She worked in donor services at Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and she also volunteered as a docent at the Kansas City Zoo for 18 years.

Judith is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and one uncle, Harry Brewster. She is survived by her sister, Cheryl Brewster of Kansas City, and an uncle, George “Gene” Brewster and his wife Violet, Peculiar.
