A Cleveland couple was killed following a two-vehicle crash April 26.

The crash occurred at 10:41 a.m. at the intersection of Rt. 2 and Holmes Road/Rt. D near West Line.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2009 Cadillac DTS Deville was traveling westbound on Route 2 when the driver, Richard Sanders, 77, Cleveland, started to cross Holmes Road and failed to yield to a southbound vehicle after stopping at the intersection.

The Cadillac was struck on the passenger side by Dale Aksamit, 20, also of Cleveland, who was driving a 1998 Dodge 1500, that caused both vehicles to run off the right side of the roadway.

The passenger in the Cadillac, LaVeta Sanders, 77, died immediately due to the impact of the crash. She was pronounced dead at scene by the Harrisonville Fire Chief. Richard Sanders received serious injuries and was transported to Research Hospital, and later died April 30.

Both Richard and LaVeta Sanders were both wearing seatbelts.

Aksamit, who was also wearing a seatbelt, was not injured, according to the MSHP crash report.

The West Peculiar and Dolan West Dolan Fire Districts assisted at the scene.
