“Bridge with no exit” project underway

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced this week that the “bridge with no exits” between Harrisonville and Peculiar should be operational by Sept. 15.

The bridge, which connects Rockhaven Road with Peculiar Drive over I-49 northwest of Harrisonville, was closed Dec. 10, 2013 due to deterioration of a structural element.

Earlier this spring, MoDOT rejected a bid received from Phillips Hardy, Inc., that was far higher than MoDOT’s highest estimate for the work.

The rejected contract sought expedited work, which placed a tight deadline to order and fabricate materials.

MoDOT re-let the contract, hoping that changes giving the contractor more time to fabricate materials and complete the work will result in multiple, competitive bids.

Spokesman Steve Porter announced this week that MoDOT accepted a different bid from Phillips Hardy and that repairs are slated to begin following Memorial Day.
