A 69-year-old woman was seriously injured in a crash on southbound Interstate 49 between Harrisonville and Peculiar during a rain storm.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 2 p.m. June 28 as a 2008 Mercury Mariner driven by Thomas Sumner, 69, Gladstone, hydroplaned, causing the vehicle to travel off the roadway and hit a guardrail. The SUV traveled across the roadway again and struck the guardrail a second time.

Police said the vehicle was traveling too fast for conditions.

An occupant in the vehicle, Nellie Sumner, also of Gladstone, received serious injuries as a result of the crash. Thomas Sumner suffered moderate injuries.

Both individuals were wearing seat belts. They were transported to Cass Regional Medical Center by Harrisonville EMS.

Troopers also investigated two additional chain reaction crashes that occurred on the on the interstate as a result of the initial incident involving the SUV, authorities said. No additional injuries were reported.

The Harrisonville Police Department and Cass County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
