The body of a 5-year-old autistic boy who is believed to have wandered away from his Garden City residence has been found.

Tony Eugene “Gene” Cory-Ferguson had been missing for more than six hours after authorities found him in a pond, deceased, at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene just before noon. Upon their arrival, they initiated a multi-agency search effort.

The child was reported to be asthmatic and has ADHD.

As part of their investigation, more than 100 searchers combed acres of corn and bean fields near the boy’s residence.

Agencies who assisted deputies with the search included the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City Helicopter unit, Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue Team, Garden City Fire Department and the Missouri Search and Rescue Team.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they are made available to the media.
