Katie Kalinka

In the small town of Peculiar, there lives people with big hearts.

Peculiar business owner Katie Kalinka, 30, is one of those people. She owns Katie’s Café, a local diner.

On May 7, a young boy riding his bicycle in Peculiar was struck by a vehicle. The boy survived, but as a result of the crash, suffered severe injuries, including head trauma that left him in a coma for a number of weeks.

On a whim, and with only a few days notice, Kalinka took on an initiative to organize a fundraiser for the 6-year-old’s family.

The event raised more than $10,200.

As a small gesture of gratitude, the town’s mayor honored Kalinka during a recent board of aldermen meeting.

The surprise: Mayor Holly Stark made a proclamation that July 8 of this year shall be declared “Katie Kalinka” day.

Stark said this is the first time she has made a proclamation of this kind.

“(Katie) does a lot for the community,” Stark said. “She’s always just taken it upon herself to help those in need.”

Stamped with the city’s seal, the proclamation reads: “Whereas, Katie Kalinka has gone above and beyond to assist with local charities; and Whereas, Katie Kalinka has shown outstanding civic leadership and involvement in the community; and Whereas, the city of Peculiar is pleased to have individuals such as Katie Kalinka active in the community.”

After the statement was read aloud at the BOA meeting, Kalinka said she had a “LOL” moment.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” she thought.

Kalinka said, “I was not expecting it. I was very shocked.”

Kalinka said she didn’t make any new rules for the occasion except for telling some of her regular “bullpen” customers that they had to behave extra special for her.
