Montana: A thunderstorm passed through Livingston, MT, near Bozeman, dumping 2.5 inches of rain in 1 hour. Small roads in central mountain areas were washed out and the interstate highway was under water.

Florida: Hurricane Andrew roars onshore during the early morning hours with catastrophic destruction to the southern suburbs of Miami. The National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables had a maximum wind gust of 164 mph. Homestead AFB was almost totally destroyed. Andrew nearly reached category 5 strength while just east of the northern Bahama Islands on the 22nd when maximum sustained winds reached 155 mph. The central pressure dropped to 27.22 inches of mercury or 922 millibars. This minimum pressure was reached again as Andrew was coming onshore south of Miami. Only the Florida Keys Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille had lower pressures at landfall in the U.S.
